First Fruits. A Monotub Soliloquy...
    #26473711 - 02/07/20 10:48 AM (3 years, 11 months ago)

I am firm believer in self reliance.  Been taking care of mine and a few others cannabis needs for many years...  the time has arrived to cultivate fungus for micro dosing and nuerogenesis.  I'm going to make a super neuroGenic Pharmaceutical something along what Paul Stamets recommends.  Combining Lion's Mane, vitamin B3 (niacin), and low doses of psilocybin mushrooms.

This is my first time attempting to fruit any fungus.

I inoculated 12 sterile quart jars of popping corn (cooked in water, gypsum, and a few cups of coffee) with Golden Teacher and Malabar spores obtained from sporeworks.com
6 of each strain fully colonized the jars with no contaminants.
They were inoculated around December 21, 2019.  I took longer than needed to get everything prepared for the next step of mixing with substrate inside my tubs and introduced fruiting conditions to fully (mostly) fully colonized substrate of coco coir and vermiculite yesterday February 6, 2020.  No casing layer.  The spawn was grown at about 83F.  The room they are in now is 75F with led bulbs a few feet above them on a 12/12 timer.  Here are a few pics.

Thanks for your interest and any advice is appreciated.

Did all your spawn jars look like that last picture?

No that one wasn't shaken up yet.

Some of them were a lot more rhizomorphic...

I’m asking because that jar is super bacterial unless myc looks totally different on popcorn.

If the others looked like that I’m surprised they colonized the tubs.

I’ve gotten good flushes off bacterial spawn before but not like that.

I’ve been told those super long rhizo fingers sticking out of the sub happen from contamination as well, but it looks pretty well colonized.

So you think I might have contams?  They smelled good...like fresh mushies when I opened them to mix with substrate.

I think so man that jar doesn’t even look like myc and the sub looks pretty sketchy.  I think you’ll definitely get some mushrooms from it but I’d bet it goes green the day after you harvest the first flush.

I’ve never used popcorn so I could be wrong but I don’t think so. Somebody else will come through soon so we’ll see what people think.

The tubs came through very nicely.  I could not be happier.  On their 2nd flush right now.  Still no contaminants but I stupidly allowed them to dry out a bit leaving the tops of the bins off for a full 24 hours in an air conditioned room.  The aborted the next set of pins.  They all turned black and then white fuzzy (I think the mycellium ate them).  I doused them with some distilled H2O and put the tops back on.  Left them for about 6 7 days.  I was about to toss them but then they pinned again...
I'm very happy with this first attempt and definitely caught the mycology bug.  Got myself a microscope...

I'm interested to see what the addition of some caw manure might do.  I fruited only in coco coir and vermiculite so I would have to assume nutrient level was low. (mostly probably from the corn)

Going to pressure cook some wild bird seed grain spawn jars.  I saved a jar of Golden Teacher and Malabar mycellium so I could transfer to the fresh grain and keep things moving.  Going to build a still air box for the transfers.

Here are some shots of the glory!
