Rhizomorphic vs Tomentose and gas exchange
    #26473419 - 02/07/20 08:15 AM (3 years, 11 months ago)

I don't have pictures with this post but I really shouldn't need them to explain this.

Here's the deal. I followed a rye-grain tek and was satisfied that had the correct moisture content and sterilized my jars properly. I inoculated 4 grain jars with a spore syringe on January 19th and put them in my lovely new tub-in-tub incubator. Some nice fluffy white growth began on the top of the grain a few days later. In two of the jars, rhizomorphic growth began to spread from the inoculation point. I shook them when they were about 30 % colonized and they're looking really great. Incidentally, these jars have lids that I reused from the time I ordered pre-hydrated and sterilized grain. Silicone injection ports an a 1/4 inch hole covered by a small sticker of whatever material they chose to allow GE.

The other two jars started out with white kinda fuzzy growth which stayed on the top of the grain after growing to about the size of a tennis ball, not quite covering the surface. Rhizomorphic growth did NOT spread through these two jars, in fact, the mycelium (I think it is) just kinda sat there and grew thicker, now looking kinda opaque. Incidentally, these two jars have lids that I made. Silicone injection ports and a quarter inch hole covered by tyvek on both the top and the bottom. I'm wondering if my lids are somehow not allowing from proper gas exchange or something?

I realize 4 jars is not exactly enough data to determine what's happening, but I can't help and wonder if I should one put tyvek on one side to allow for greater GE.

I did a previous batch (1/9) of a different strain and it never really took off (my lids). I had a little bit of white fuzz that grew within a couple days where the spore solution hit the grain but they jars have just stalled and failed to colonize.

Should I just shake these underdeveloped jars and just hope for the best? Should I use a different material for GE? Also, less importantly, why do I have such an annoying time uploading pics to this site from my iPhone?

If you made it through this post, thanks for bearing with me. I appreciate y'all.

What temperature is your room? It should be mid-20s celsius.

Your gas exchange is fine.

The biggest issue I see is using spore syringes -> grain instead of agar -> grain. You need to germinate spores or clone fruit onto agar and then put a chunk of agar into the jar.

I would shake both jars if you haven't already.
