Post shake colonization???
    #26473304 - 02/07/20 05:30 AM (4 years, 10 days ago)

Shouldn’t there be an aggressive and rapid expansion post shake? It’s been a couple of days since shaking. White dots of mycelium have only kind of “flared up”, but besides that they are just sitting there...  I don’t see any rapid expansion or aggressive growth like I have seen and researched...

It takes 2-3 days just for the mycelium to recover from being beaten up in the shake. You should be seeing the mycelium spreading to nearby grains soon, and from there it goes quickly.

What you are experiencing is normal. Give it a couple more days and you will definitely see growth

You are correct - the first shake is typically done at around 20-30% colonisation; after a good shake the whole jar (e.g. 1 qt/litre) should be fully colonised within ~7 days (or earlier). Jars usually start showing signs of recovery about 2 days after the shake. But once it recovers - it should expand really quickly (unless it hits contams).

Unless something in your environment has changed like a big temperature increase or drop that could stunt the growth; the lack of recovery after shake quite often is indication that  some part  of the jar was contamined in the first place and has now has spread around thus forcing mycelium from expansion into survival/fight mode.

If you don't see anything visually wrong with the jars yet, the best you can do is wait and see what is happening for a few more days.

I’m 3 days post shake and my jars are almost completely white today! They bounced back within the first 24 hours, but a few days is to recover is normal but growth will explode once they do.

Yeah I usually notice the grains getting fuzzy again the two days post shake, then day three is usually when they take off.

Putting time frames on when things "should" happen is a rough go. I've had cubes that colonize quarts in a week and I've had cubes that take three. It all depends on the culture, temps, food, genetic expression, contams etc. Too many factors to have cut and dry time frames. If it's bouncing back at all it's probably fine. Just give it time.

Alright. Well there are some trusted cultivators that will say it should of been colonized in X amount of days after the shake. If it’s not then something is wrong and throw it out. Bacteria, contam, something else is competing with the mycelium in there, it’s not good spawn, and you need to chunk it. It seems like they generally say it should be fully colonized 3 to 5 days after the shake, something is wrong if it isn’t, and chunk it.

You shouldn’t see full colonization for up to 2 weeks if you shake at like 20 percent with MS, but if you were to shake around 50% you should see full colonization in like 7 days.

Kind of hard to tell when you shook without pics.

"Generally" is the key word. I think experience will bring the realization that, as in life, very little in this hobby is absolute. Your jars recovering withing 24hr is a good sign.

I see. Little white dots of mycelium did appear after the first day and just looked like they flared up, but it’s four days after the shake and they still look the same. No change in how they are four days in, no expansion or growth. I guess I’ll just wait it out. It sounds like it can actually take weeks, not just days, I didn’t know that.

If they don’t start moving in a day or two it might be bad.

My millet jars have turned all sweaty looking inside... It looks like the mycelium has spread some more somewhat, but is that from the temperature differential since they’re is probably more heat and temperature inside the jar?

Here you go. All of them are like this. I shook one up again just now just to see if maybe the growth will come back stronger and fill out or what happens.

looks alright.  your mycelium doesn't have hard edges so it's still spreading out.

So just condensation you think because the temperature is probably more hot and increasing in the jar?

I don't see any type of rhizomorphic mycelial growth anywhere. I don't know how to describe it... It's more blotchy than anything else...

I just shook some jars of LM the other night.  They usually take me 3-4 days before they start picking up again.  Normal.

Looks ok to me. Might have put grin in jars a little wet, that can cause condensation inside during the PC run.
