Anyone meditate?
Going to try concious breathing to build my lung capacity. Wondering if there were any experiences any of you want to share before I start this habit. Tips, tricks, or just stories.
--------------------
Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Psalm 12:6 The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. Revelation 3:11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

I used to meditate back in my college days for a psychology course. Havent done it in awhile. Takes dedication/committement but is so worth it for the benefits.
It takes practice to get good at it, as in the beginning you will be fighting with random thoughts or sleepiness, but once u get the skill down, its really rewarding.

Oddly enough I find focusing to much on my breathing sort of takes away from the whole thing. I usually start by saying a mantra in my head several times. Like "I am relaxing" or "I am at peace" something simple like that. Then I just sort of let my breathing come and go as it pleases and just sort of relax.
It's sort of paradoxical cause in a way it's like if you try to much to clear your mind of thoughts they just come up more. I have a hard time explaining what I do when I meditate really. There's different ways of doing it and different types of meditation and I think it's kind of different for everyone. But I don't try to hard to clear my mind or anything. Just affirm to myself that I'm relaxing and feel myself sink into a deep state of sort of focused non focus.
Some times when I sit there long enough I get this buzzing around the top of my head and tingling up and down my spine. Also alot of the time I do more of a visual/sensory meditation where I just picture different smells/sights/sounds that I find peaceful. And then maybe I'll take a stroll down the side of a river in my mind and just try to create different details in my head. Like birds chirping and the wind on my face and the sun glistening off the water as I'm walking along. Also just listining to some peaceful rhythmic instrumental music, closing your eyes and sinking into the beat is a proper meditation in its own way.
Try different things out and see what works for you and eventually you should find something you like and that comes more naturally to you. A big tip for any method is don't try to force yourself to relax or anything. It's counter productive. Cheers!

Good advice!
Yeah, with those random, intrusive thoughts, being passive about them is key. Let them "float by" do not engage the thought, treat it like noise that u acknowledge but not dwell on. That is key.
Mindful meditation, like focusing on your breathing, i find to be pretty easy. The only challenging thing is the random thoughts that u must passively let go/float by. After awhile, you will feel a sense of attentive focus and concentration and thats the state of meditation.

I engage in a daily meditation practice. It's a form of self care - like eating healthy food and exercising. Sitting still and observing what's going on inside - getting to know our inner world is helpful.
Noticing when we don't want to meditate or exercise or eat well (AKA resistance) is insightful also. The repetitive thoughts "I don't want to. I don't feel like it" are common to all humans. Some people say they "hate" doing simple things such as doing the laundry or dishes. Watching the mind of resistance increases awareness and cultivates liberation. Plus, it's just plain entertaining to watch the stuff our mind spews out!

Pursed lips or conscience breathing.

I don't know about lung capacity, but for meditation, this is the best book ever written, by far. I can not recommend it enough.
I think it's even on audible, so you can probably find an MP3 if youre a cheap ass, and willing to dig around. It really is worth the money though. It's both enjoyable to read, and entirely pragmatic in it's instruction.
It provides very clear and specific instructions on both basic meditation, and how to experience all 4 Jhana, which if you haven't experienced them (and you haven't), there's nothing comparable. It's better than any drug. It's better than sex.

+1 for mindfulness, bliss and beyond. Ajahn Brahm also has a heap of YouTube videos/guided meditations online (although in heaps of them he seems to have a cold which is distracting).
I would also highly recommend "The Mind Illuminated" by John Yates. Maybe not as a first 'howto/introduction' but it lays out the progression of meditation stages very well.

yes I basically do Zen meditation and it's pretty accessible... not much information needed to get started.
the key points are keeping the hands open and palm up, and the eyes open with the gaze on something you can absorb yourself in
maybe it might be dank to do that with the breathing you're interested in but just keep in mind that the point of meditation by and far most certainly is to get rid of thought and be thoughtless. Arguing against this is cope from people that don't really believe in themselves enough to know they can become the witness.

It's important to no try and get rid of the thoughts. As that leads to more thinking. Just do the meditation and the mind stills.

Mindful meditation focused on your in and out breath can increase your lung capacity as it increases your conscious awareness of your lung's capacity limits.

But most of the time your not supposed to actually 'alter' your breath during meditation, but let it come naturally and observe it. Any 'doing' causes the mind to be active.
Although there are plenty of breathing exercises you can do to improve your breathing and if they become a habit then that will be how you end up naturally breathing during meditation.
In Yoga there is breathing stuff though. Mainly you just need to learn to breath from the diaphragm by default. Some of the Tibetan Buddhist stuff involves breathing in specific ways although that might just be things like rituals at the start rather then during meditation. Qi Gong and Thai Chi movements are done with the breath.
