First Grain Grow (WBS) Shoebox Journal (2-04-2020)

-WBS Soaked in hot water for 24 hours, picked out floaters, rinse thoroughly. Boiling water at the end to help drying process
-7 Polyfil Jars with 1(1/4in hole) pressure cooked at 15PSI for about 90min. Made me nervous at first. Sat in PC over night
-Inoculation in SAB was done in a overly disinfected closet with the door cracked. Golden Teacher Strain. I stuffed my Polyfil jars using a Phillips screwdriver. Put syringe through Polyfil, and used about 5.5CC for 7 jars. They are now sitting in the SAB.
I also have 5 or 6 BRF cakes colonizing, along with 2 WBS quarts in a different area. Micropore tape look was used for those guys. I The two WBS quarts have signs of life. They have B+ strain, so do the BRF cakes. The BRF cakes and two WBS quarts were PCed in an electric PC, 15PSI was not sustained but I just cooked them longer. Will be experimenting with the electric PC. Plan on doing agar soon.

I’m just keeping the temps solid, and not too dry in the closet where they’re located. Not lifting up either bins for a picture yet, trying not to look at them too much.
I saw some solid BRF Bulk grows, and was going to do that to get used to growing bulk. What are your guys thoughts on BRF Bulk? I’m leaving the closet door cracked so it stays relatively warm in the closet, but trying to keep my kitty cats out of there at the same time. (They’ve been good about not going in there.)

BRF Bulk is risky in my opinion because you are damaging the substrate to recolonize Coir, Why not just fruit them as BRF cakes in a SGFC?
I am not a fan of BRF to Shoe box either, same situation... BRF is Contaminate prone because you normally inoculate with MS instead of Agar. Better to let them soak and roll than chop them up and box them.

Ehh I might just do cakes then. I think I have 6 cakes, might just try one smaller box and the rest cakes. I never really thought of it as damaging before, which with my limited knowledge sounds plausible. I’ve only done PF once or twice years ago, and from I remember and read, the results are normally pretty low? I’ve also read some people having good results too though.
I guess it would be nice to have some product for while I wait.

Can’t get a good picture of the other jar, because I don’t want to move any of them. Syringe is like 15 months old as well, from an awesome place though. I’m trying to keep my heater from blowing inside the closet at all, currently only 66F in the closet though. Wish I could get it up some though, thoughts on that?

This is how the two I inoculated first are doing. I innoced down the side, so the myc is wrapping around the bottom really well. Out of the other 7, a few have showed myc. A few of the BRF jars showed myc too but I didn’t take pictures of any of those. It seems like it’s growing faster now that I got the temps up.
I’m about to get my taxes and I’m making a dope agar setup, and can finally take this seriously. I’d sure like an AA PC but damn they’re expensive. If this all truly intrigued me, I’ll probably buy one. Sure would feel safer too.

Ya I use a presto 16qt and I’m happy with it TBH, I just feel it would be a good investment if I truly enjoy this which I think I will, and be cool like that too. After the boiling water, I put them in a tub (same black and yellow one in the pic,) and stirred them around occasionally. Honestly, it took 24 hours to dry and I even put a fan on low to help them dry. They just didn’t want to dry, what should I do next time? I’m using your shoebox tek BTW, thanks man.

(Edit) Didn’t relalize how much more they’ve colonized since my last picture. My kid puked on me a little and I’m not going by my jars ATM
When should I shake my jars? Obviously they’re a little more colonized then this last picture. I read shake around 30%, but I just wanted an opinion. I’d rather shake a little late than a little early, right? I feel like mine have a ways to go still?

This is how they look. The other 7 are colonizing but too small to bother with a picture. I only post again because I wanted to ask how much longer till shake? I would think 30% colonization will take a little longer but see people shake around where I’m at.

This is how they look after being shaken. I think I shook them Yesterday. Seems like they’re booming now.

Won’t be long now.. maybe a week for your grain jars. Star prepping your substrate. I suggest coir and verm and 1 qt of spawn per shoe box. If you need some links check out my signature.
Bulk is the way to go.. I’ve never done pf cakes but they look annoying to stay on top of, shoeboxes are set and forget till after the first flush... can’t beat that.

Ya I figured about a week. I’m actually doing bulk with the BRF, PF is a different style from what I’ve read than I’m trying to do. I just got part of my taxes so I’m ordering my agar setup and going bonkers now. Am excited. Posting a picture of my jars the day after as a comparison for those interested.

Bulk really is the way to do it... I did cakes my very first grow, and I’m glad that I did as I think it helped me better understand some basic concepts/parameters and also build better habits, but now I stick with bulk as I find it much more productive.
Occasionally I’ll do cakes with my own personal twist when I get a wild hair up my ass, like “what would happen if I used horse poo and straw in my cakes”, and then still spawn those to bulk. I tend to find that they grow mushrooms mostly the same, so I’m not really sure why I do it lol. Variety I suppose.
Your stuff is looking right. Just remember that patience is your greatest asset in all of this and you’ll typically come out golden. It’s a wonderful hobby.

Thanks guys. Ya I don't remember exactly why I started the BRF jars, I think I was thinking it would be quicker than grain jars from some stuff I read... whether or not that is true, I don't know.
Do you do agar? Whats your favorite no pour tek? I was planning on doing pasty plates. If you do agar, whats your favorite brand agar. I was going to get two brands to experiment I guess. One brand I wanted to try was telephone brand.

I get a pre mix lme agar from an online source. Seems todo the trick
Pasty plates are a great way to get started. Read the whole thread for tips and pointers. Start with a small batch till you get the hang of them, maybe 4 or 6.
I’m going to start using these I’m just waiting for them in the mail. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26374264/page/1

Here’s how they look now. Didn’t picture the other 7 as they are not worthy of a picture quite yet. Last jars before I move onto agar work.

Are these ready to spawn? They pretty much looked like this yesterday, I was going to spawn them tomorrow. Is that ok?
