Handling Jars During Colonization
    #26471604 - 02/06/20 07:45 AM (4 years, 10 days ago)

I recently knocked up different strains in different subs.  2 questions:

1. Is it safe to handle jars in beginning/middle stages of colonization? Don’t want to risk contam or damage to mycelium.
2. Is it ok to keep ALL different strain jars in same space? Closet in bedroom, temp controlled.  They’re all labeled and in different Monotubs for storage.

This is my first grow! Hopefully I’ve obsessively researched enough to avoid certain noob mistakes but I’m sure I’ll make a few.  Any advice appreciated, thanks!!

General handling for inspection purposes probably makes no difference at all.

If you did PF Tek, it won't matter much how much you move them around as they tend to stay pretty solid.
Grain, on the other hand, if you move it around too much, especially early on, you can slow the process down a bit by making the early culture need to repair itself rather than spread unimpeded. It's still not detrimental unless for some reason you shake it around every day.

You can keep them in the same place, pretty much wherever you want. Ideally you'll want it in the 65 - 75F range and in ambient light.
Most people just keep them on a shelf in a spare room or closet and do their best to forget about them for a couple weeks.

Man that’s great info, thank you!

I read (at least my particular brand of mushies) they are best colonized between 70-8 degrees F.  Is this accurate? My temp has been mainly consistently between 72-75, with intermittent spikes upward of 79-80, nothing higher so far.  Should I stop heating the room?

Also last question I promise!! Will running a space heater or fan during this period be bad? I’ve been running my space heater in the room and in closet sometimes for 5-10 minute intervals.  Will it stir up contams that would risk grain health?

I find somewhere in the range of 70-75ºF to be optimal for cubensis. 73ºF if I'm being particular.
The problem with higher temperatures is that they encourage contaminant growth, so, unless you have a pristine culture, you'll likely have something outperform your desired culture. For now, I would keep it on the lower end of the 70's.

Using a space heater is fine so long as it's not creating a hotspot on your cultures - in other words, keep your cultures far enough away from it that they're only changing with the ambient temperature. The radiator-style heaters are preferred because they don't direct heat in an isolated area. But again, I'd just keep it off if you're maintaining low 70's without it. I often grow in the higher 60's with no issue at all.

As far as contaminants go - they're everywhere, all around you at all times in massive numbers. Air currents do indeed kick them up more, but, seeing as they're absolutely everywhere, it's not going to be making any noticeable difference.  This is why we use things like Still Air Boxes and Laminar Flow Hoods to work in a clean or still-air environment.

Remember that the outside air temperature is several degrees cooler than the mycelium in your jars. If you're growing a mushroom variety that best colonizes between 70-80 degrees, you want the air temperature to be 68-75 to compensate for the jars internal heat. If your normal room temperature is in this range, you don't need that space heater.

If the room is too cold without the space heater and you want to automate things a bit, get a oil radiator heater with a thermostat and set it in the low 70s or whatever is needed to keep the peak heat below 76. That's what I do.

I wasn’t taking that into consideration. Thank you!
