It’s a northern water snake. Nerodia sipedon. Not a viper. Not venomous but they are extremely aggressive.

He said viper, though, so that is the closest snake that fit the description of a moccasin is why I thought so.

Yeah, that's a copperhead, I know that, but you got to admit, those water snakes fool people all the time. Everybody kills those poor things around here thinking that they are moccasins and it make me sick!

Either way it was a thick ass snake probably the fattest I’ve seen here in pa. See black snakes all the time but the don’t have girth like that.

I don’t think water moccasins live in the northern half of the ovoid range

Silly snakes

Found 3 fruits today. The one pictured I'm printing now, soon to hit agar. Beautiful specimen! One of the bluest I've found so far, instead of just the cap's margin the whole cap is bluing.. after picking. No more pins might be over for this area... will keep checking but no pins isn't a good sign.
Edit: picture doesn't do this fruit complete justice. It's at least 6 inches long in the stipe. Longest I've found this year have been around 4 inches.

Is there mulch under that bamboo forest or are they on the bamboo itself?

If you go to the knotweed when the season is over you can collect all the dead bamboo and use it as ovoid food, they love that shit. I usually bury it under regular mulch but it actually has a nice aesthetic if you wanted to incorporate it into your landscaping. Knotweed actually has insane potential as a crop but no one wants to touch it because it is “invasive” that just means it’s good at being a plant

I think he’s talking about real bamboo not knotweed. Bamboo is much more like actual wood than knotweed.
Bamboo tends to be pretty invasive too, but there is native bamboo as well. I think Maryland is the northern extent of its range. The common name is switch cane I believe.

We have a lot of bamboo stands around here. Some of this stuff is five inches in diameter and 30 feet tall.
This is a really nice mulched path with bamboo that encircles a super high security three letter agency in Virginia. So much potential but I’ve never actually found ovoids growing inside one of these stands

If you start a patch there I bet it'll go crazy within a few years
