I'm literally a stones throw from the burg and would be more than happy to fill up some bags lol.

I would say that there are many many mulch beds I have neglected all around the burg and if you looked it wouldnt be hard to find them.

Ive been hitting up this extremely public spot every other day for the past week. It’s right along a paved path with a constant stream of bikers, joggers, and families with little curious kids. I’ve been going right a sunset just so there aren’t as many people. It doesn’t look like a big patch at first glance but it’s essentially just a sea of mostly hidden clusters. I fill my backpack as quickly as possible and get out. Sometimes it’s just easier to grab entire clusters. There’s still a couple more loads worth but this incoming rain will likely induce some quick rotting.

Old debris within 10-15ft of a box elder, springy ground by slightly bald or disturbed areas of grass on a flood plain within 100ft of a river. You wanna look for those knotweeds in these type of areas. Keep an eye out for the big Ovoids to catch your eye then get low and comb through the whole area. Most of the time they are just below the grass/leaves.

Part of my haul from yesterday. Any tips on storage methods? I am planning on vac sealing unless there's a better option.

Hey nice finds! I'm a first-year hunter in SEPA in the suburbs of Philly and I haven't seen a mushroom of any sort during any of my walks this spring at a few different places. I've been searching up and down a large creek much of the time, sometimes driving a half hour or so to a different location on the creek. I'm starting to think they either don't grow by me or I just need a larger body of water. And is the season really wrapping up already?

Yes, they are definitely out there, and yes, the season is wrapping up around Philly already. For me, this year, it started 2nd to last week of April and now it's drying up. I've harvested nearly 200g dry for the season so far.

High humidity & consistent precipitation are needed for several days to get the patches going, and with this dry weather, they're drying up & not putting out new fruits. Also the higher vegetation makes it MUCH harder to spot an already tough to spot mushroom.

Others have said this, and I agree, Ovoids are really difficult to hunt.

I have 8 years experience hunting wild mushrooms, including 5 years hunting woodlover actives on the west coast, and IMHO Ovoids are one of the most challenging mushrooms I've ever hunted. I went to 12-15 spots this year, found them at 4 or 5. They are so good at hiding, have deadly lookalikes, grow in tough terrain to access & navigate, seem to love spooning with stinging nettles, have a narrow window of conditions to get ideal fruits, and narrow window of time to hunt them.

Just keep getting out there in the woods & enjoying yourself. Learn to spot box elder & good habitats from your car. Get a good map application & start marking spots you want to explore in the future. You'll find them if you keep at it, but they're not as easy to find as the photos in this forum would make you think!

YES DUDE! Thank you for doing this...helps a lot in timing my return to any patches. I was curious how fast they would grow...

Nice! I stopped by a few spots that looked promising in the DC area this past weekend but there were WAY too many people. Didn't even get out of my car.

Went out Saturday with no success.

In New York, our season seems to be a mix of things that have grown despite the cold temps and things that are still very early in their season. Japanese Knotweed and Ostrich Ferns got very damaged by recent frosts, more so the ferns. Seems like the mushrooms are behind. I found plenty of Dryad's Saddles, but no ovoids. In another area (non flood plain) I found fresh Mica Caps, and Scarlet Cups are still plentiful. The few places I've checked still not seeing any morels. Anyone's experience matching this?

Anyone have experience with foraging for Ovoids in areas dominated by Bishop's Weed (Aegopodium podagraria)? The side of the river/creek (large creek) I'm looking around is loaded with Boxelders, Japanese Knotweed, but the ground cover is largely Bishop's Weed. The Bishop's Weed is growing no problem, despite the cold, and is quite high already, making searching the ground difficult. I was using a stick to move plants aside constantly.

That's sweet your patch is finally going!  I feel like all those cold fronts really pushed your season back this yr.  Glad to see your project is going strong.  :bigblunt:

The speed of growth is related to the average temp.  Just to give you an idea of how the time between those pics changes with temps, here's what the days separated would roughly be with different day temps.
50s = 8 days
60s = 6 days
70s = 4 days
80s = 2 days

If your planning on harvesting, then the top pic is when it's best to do so.  The bottom pic is ok, but nowhere near as good as the top pic.

Thanks Textured, I think it’s just a later season here than most areas as the ocean keeps us cool this time of year.  Here’s a couple good lookin specimens I wanted to share.  I’ve been watering.

I made what was probably my last little grab of the season this morning. I'm hoping for one more real substantial period of rain but it isn't looking likely. It was fun though.

I appreciate everyone who takes the time to respond to questions from noobs. These yearly threads are such a rich archive of helpful information.

It's not much but I came across it honestly
