I know it was mentioned not to talk about the weather but all that rain forcasted for next week + the temps staying below 90 should bring 1 more good flush!

I'm wondering if they grow in my immediate area.

Pics from a flood plain adjacent to a small(er) river that's probably 20 feet across. There is a bunch of man-made flood control stuff, topped off with shitloads of tree mulch. From the road, the man-made part goes into the woods as far as I can see, something like hundreds of yards. Walked thru there yesterday (pics attached, taken from about 50 yards into the mulch, in one pic you might see a red thing in the background which is my car) and saw some teeny tiny guys sprouting - maybe 10 - in the whole place.

Sooo frustrating.

That area looks way too swampy. Maybe the grassy area on right in the second picture.

I've seen some talk of potency in different patches/flushes varying & wanted to add my experience as a cautionary tale..

Two weekends ago I ate a tiny quarter-sized fresh cap from a beautiful ovoid that was a different phenotype than the ones I usually find..more saucer-shaped, spindly stalk, looked kinda like azzies. Might have weighed 1g wet. That little bit hit me so hard I had to sit down on the trail. Felt every leaf in the forest moving with the wind for about 20 minutes.

This weekend, I ate about 15g wet blended in a smoothie of the more normal ones for my area, wavier caps with thicker stalks. They were my first harvest of the season, back in late April, and I froze them fresh. I set myself up on a nice rock on a cliff expecting to merge with the universe, ..... & NOTHING. I mean barely a lift from baseline. Some depth perception changes & mild shifts in color, but smoking weed was stronger.

Really a cautionary tale that there seems to be wild variation in potency here, hard to know what to expect. I plan to powder my remaining dry stash and cap it out so at least they're all evened out across what I have.

Here's a pic of the unusual ones with the little cap I ate...did't realize I took them:

This is what they are more typically like in my area (Deep SEPA):

Aaaaaand fuck it, one more post because this honey hole I hit earlier this week was probably my last big haul for the season & the mushrooms were gorgeous:

Might go back for one more try if the weather gets wet again...but I think my season is mostly done.

This ovoid season has been one of the saving graces for my mental health in this quarantine, so THANK YOU to everyone here helping each other out & sharing detailed information.

I've hunted mushrooms all over the world and but never had a chance to hunt ovoids until this year. They're a bucket list mushroom for me, so this was an amazing few weeks for me.

Hey nice finds! I'm a first-year hunter in SEPA in the suburbs of Philly and I haven't seen a mushroom of any sort during any of my walks this spring at a few different places. I've been searching up and down a large creek much of the time, sometimes driving a half hour or so to a different location on the creek. I'm starting to think they either don't grow by me or I just need a larger body of water. And is the season really wrapping up already?

Looks good they fruit fron aged deirbs piles but it is less common to find voids on the fresh piles. A good way to judge the age of the pile is by looking to see if plants are growing out of the deirbs. Typically the mpre productive piles are further from the water where they have time to decompose. They can be found on fresh deirbs but it is more like finding a needle in a haystack.

There is a island I hunt that is essentially a giant deirbs pile with no vegetation. It is suprisingly productive for a giant pile of wood with no plants sitting in the direct sun.

I'm from Philly and they are definitely around. Foraging for mushrooms is just really difficult. As someone pointed out the other day, the posts on here can give the impression that the mushrooms are going to find you.

This is my third year looking and also the first year I've had any success. And I only found two patches. This was after going to roughly a dozen different locations and typically spending a few hours looking around.

The one big takeaway for me this season was what it means to actually look for mushrooms. I spent a lot of time just walking around in spots that I expected them to be. That worked out one time but the other time, I really had to dig in the vegetation. I wish I had realized this earlier in the season because this year seems to have been a bumper crop.

Again, I think the posts on here make it seem like this is a cakewalk. I'm sure that in some places it is, particularly for experienced foragers. But my experience has been that this takes real work.

Hell yeah...with the rain that's coming in I am fairly confident I will be finding them this year traveling this creek...I did pull back some debris and had a close call with a copper head curled up but I will walk the area for miles after this rain until I find them wish me luck!!

Also scored a Vintage spoon with a born date of 1940 and loads of river glass which I'm a big fan off..

I doubt you’ll find any in that mess. That debris gets moved all around multiple times a year. You need to find debris that is old enough there is vegitation growing over it.

Debris piles are not really a prime hunting situation IMO. Ovoids really prefer wood that is mostly or completely buried in soft sandy soil with some grasses and other vegitation mixed in.

At this point in the season nearly all your ovoids are going to be almost completely hidden under vegitation, mainly grasses.

Ok I'll travel more after this rain there is so many areas slap full of vegetation over the debris I will seek out those areas more and put a few whole days in on the sides of the river I'm on vacation with nothing but time to waste

Some of the areas I'm talking about are very sandy with debris and lots of soft spots in the mix where you almost feel like you could fall into the ground because of how soft it is should I search those areas more?

Debris piles like that will get buried under sandy sediments on meandering creeks when the path of the water changes. Generally a creek has a flood plain and over time the creek will change its location tonflow anywhere in the plain. Often times you can see ruts in the ground where the creek has been in the past and then it’s been filled up with sand and wood and whatnot. These areas will usually have a fairly springy feel to it when walking. Those are the areas you want to look. Also the back side of sand banks where slopes back down before the sharp rise of the bank.

I’ve been finding a lot right on the edge of the creek banks.

Plants are a major factor and a better indicator that a spot will be productive than other mushroom species growing. From my experience areas that are not inhabited by the three major indicator species I highlight in my guide (knotweed, boxelder, and nettle) have a very low chance of producing ovoids.  Sometimes areas with 2/3 species will be good but most the time I dont even bother looking unless I can see all three of these plants at a glance. I hunt rivers mostly and there are stretches for miles that produce and miles long that have nothing on the same river. Go on maps and make a list of all the public parks near streams and rivers, start crossing them off until you find what you are looking for.
I have given up picking mulchbeds in public places now, the yeild and risk is just not the same as the natural habitats.

When you gauge the dostance from the water you plan on hunting you need to consider the vertical distance not just horizontal. Some of the best spots I have hunted are right on the edge of the water, up high enough not to be flooded frequently.
