This is my first post here. I've been fascinated with this thread. I have a location scouted out and once temps get warmer here I'm going foraging.
In preparation, I did something I've been wanting to do for a while, which was go through the species description for the ovoids on Mushroom Observer and define every technical term, so I would know exactly what to look for. I wrote everything up as a journal entry here:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26665074
I figured this would be helpful for other beginners or people trying to up their skills with LBMs.
Not positive this is the best way to share this info, just let me know.
GINK0 Nice job with that - i don’t know the rules but perhaps your link could get added here https://www.shroomery.org/12508/Psilocybe-ovoideocystidiata It will likely get more attention in years to come. G

I'm less than an hour north of NYC in the Hudson Valley.
There was a disease in early 2000 that ravaged some trees, might have been box elder but I don't know off the top of my head
I did some googling and dug up this observation from mushroomobserver: https://mushroomobserver.org/observer/show_observation/93351
Last year there was also a find near Binghamton

Do any good look alikes bruise blue? I have gotten a few opinions and it seems like these are ovoids but I don't want to destroy my organs if I'm wrong lol. All picked within 100ft of a river in a flood plain by fallen trees and shorter grass/weeds

I've found Entoloma sp. that were blue and quite convincing at first glance/ pick. Took a spore print cause something felt off about the mushroom, wasn't quite ovoid looking but very close plus I was quite new at the time. The bluing in it wasn't from bruising, some stain like that on the stipe. Once dried/ spore print was done it looked like an entirely different mushroom, no blue whatsoever remained and spores were pink/orangish. Just a nooby discovery when I was getting started, but one worthwhile.
All of those you have pictured look good. Just triple check bruising, spore print and if in doubt just throw it out.

I want to second that those look solid but be sure to do your due diligence.
I hit the jackpot today! Right off the water, a major stand of box elders and mulch. The most ideal habitat I've ever seen. And that's when I saw them.
Agrocybes everywhere! Pins, mature fruits, decaying fruits. But not a single ovoid lol

I've now noted 2 areas that look good ... at least theoretically, based on descriptions. Found the 2nd on a bike ride ... is in a low and wet area, and its covered in shredded tree mulch (looks like the county cleared the trees to keep them away from the road, and just left the shred in place). Walked around a bit, though, and didn't see anything.
This morning I went to the other place. It was wet, saw lots of knotweed, wet logs, wet branches, wet ground, flood plain ... but no mushrooms. None. Anywhere. Of any kind.
It *was* cold, and has been chilly for the last few days. Will keep looking.
Pic of place I visited this AM. If only.

Those areas look good.....but some of the more experienced hunters have come to the conclusion that areas with small creeks such as the one in your photo, aren't as likely to have ovoids growing by them.
It's recommended that the floodplain you search for is next to a river which is decently sized - one that's deep enough to canoe across and wide enough to swim across (at least 20-30 ft wide)
If you look back in this thread you'll find the posts I'm referring to, they have lots of really good info.

In my experience the larger the river. The larger the floodplain, the larger the ovoids.

OK, well I know where one of those are located, maybe a 10 minute drive from my place. Will take a look around.
Thanks for the advice!

I have just as much luck with drainage ditches as rivers. The best are small to medium sized creeks. Larger creeks and rivers tend to have too much silt
Creeks have very well defined banks that make hunting much easier
I don’t even mess with rivers despite living five miles from a huge one

magicmushroomhunt said: nice haul last night

I believe it is important to note, due to the very cold temperatures in PA last night, I saw a massive amounts of pins who were completely blue and mature caps who were crinkling out.
I am lucky because I got to harvest hundreds and hundreds of aborts but I am also wondering if anybody can give insight into how cold spells like these affect the season.
Nice haul From what ive seen the cold killed off alot of the plants but the mushrooms seem to be doing just fine. The ground temps stayed pretty good despite the snow. Exposed pins got fucked but all the pins that are under sticks and leaves are fine. If you encounter a big cluster of pind grab some deirbs and make a little pile on them. It will ensure they devolope through harsh conditions. Also causes the stems to grow longer and thicker as the caps reach for the fresh sir exchange.
Really? That is very smart and I would have never thought. I will attempt to do that with a patch this afternoon.
I also have wondered about how large the genetic diversity is between varieties of psilocybe ovoid. It seems there might be varieties of ovoids that don’t even have the same habitats as each other (ie. some fruiting directly out of large logs vs. sandy banks) Although it’s certainly possible they are just very versatile.
We know so much about these mushrooms yet we don’t know anything at all.
There is a lot of diversity in this species. Right now I'm working with 2 localities. One is putting out very similar homogeneous looking fruit and the other is putting out a few different phenotypes, sometimes within the same container, that are different from the other locality. I'm working on finding more localities and phenotypes to answer some of the questions that are often asked about ovoids.

Hey guys first post here. Not sure if I’m doing this right but I believe I found my first ovoids. They were found like 20 feet off the Ohio River surrounded by Box Elders growing off a decaying log. They all bruised blue and smelled just like Cubensis.
