Went back to some spots I'd visited before, found the patch completely wrecked. Woodchips had been dug up, mycelium was all exposed. Very disheartening to see such disrespect.

One of several reasons I don't talk about these much even among friends - knowledge spreads exponentially and makes it's way to knuckleheads like this.

How should one best go about ensuring the vitality of a patch?
Beyond cutting the mushrooms rather than pulling them out, what other things should people be mindful of when harvesting?
I imagine some people dig up patches in hopes of starting their own somewhere else but there's probably a more sustainable way to go about that.

Hey everyone!
This is my first post here. I've been fascinated with this thread. I have a location scouted out and once temps get warmer here I'm going foraging.
In preparation, I did something I've been wanting to do for a while, which was go through the species description for the ovoids on Mushroom Observer and define every technical term, so I would know exactly what to look for. I wrote everything up as a journal entry here:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26665074
I figured this would be helpful for other beginners or people trying to up their skills with LBMs.
Not positive this is the best way to share this info, just let me know.

Went out in my area today to check a few new spots and I only saw a few types of fungi fruiting (not ovoids) so that sucks but I ment go to PA or a little more south this weekend if weather's good.

Cutting with scissors is fine but often you are gonna miss half the mushroom when the stems are long and wind down through layers of grass. I raped this spot two weeks ago. Ripped them right out of the ground and I still got a totally new flush. Good patches aren’t gonna last more than a year or two and my opinion is grab that substrate to make patches if you want.

This weather couldn’t be more perfect for keeping this season chugging along. This will probably be the last week of really good action though. Still haven’t seen many that are too far gone and pins are still coming up.

Get a pair of yellow tinted glasses. Really increases contrast and helps discern anything that's not green.

I know this question has been asked before, but I don't think we ever came to a proper answer.
From what I've seen here in Jersey, ovoids grow exclusively in mulch. I've searched floodplains to no avail. Is it likely that they would occur in floodplains so long as boxelders are native in that area?

Only got out for an hour today but filled a garbage bag of voids and a grocery bag of morels. This season is making me wish I was a non essential.

Picking the stembutts is cool and all but my favorite way to pick is to slide my fingers down the stem until i feel the butt and slice the stem off with my fingernail. Saves hours of cleaning dirt off them, keeping you colletion clean is very important if you are harvesting in bulk. Often you will pull a mushroom only to discover pins attached to the stembutts that would have matured if you left them undisturbed.

I've personally have had high winds the past few days drying everything up. The only salvageable 1's were buried & few & far between.
Has the winds been up for you or anyone else?

Well it's definitely effected my new area unless I'm between flushes which I'm unsure of being that I just found this area last week. The exposed 1's are dried & shriveled & the keepers are few and far between.
Hoping the rain comes in Thursday-Sunday that they forcasted. That should get them popping.
