I have always found both to be at maximum potency at minimum size (pin)
Many disagree with me avidly though

I believe it is important to note, due to the very cold temperatures in PA last night, I saw a massive amounts of pins who were completely blue and mature caps who were crinkling out.
I am lucky because I got to harvest hundreds and hundreds of aborts but I am also wondering if anybody can give insight into how cold spells like these affect the season.
Nice haul From what ive seen the cold killed off alot of the plants but the mushrooms seem to be doing just fine. The ground temps stayed pretty good despite the snow. Exposed pins got fucked but all the pins that are under sticks and leaves are fine. If you encounter a big cluster of pind grab some deirbs and make a little pile on them. It will ensure they devolope through harsh conditions. Also causes the stems to grow longer and thicker as the caps reach for the fresh sir exchange.

I would agree. Smaller mushrooms tend to be more potent in my experience. It would be nice if the gov here let us do scientific research on these mushrooms they have lots to teach us.

Really? That is very smart and I would have never thought. I will attempt to do that with a patch this afternoon.
I also have wondered about how large the genetic diversity is between varieties of psilocybe ovoid. It seems there might be varieties of ovoids that don’t even have the same habitats as each other (ie. some fruiting directly out of large logs vs. sandy banks) Although it’s certainly possible they are just very versatile.
We know so much about these mushrooms yet we don’t know anything at all.

After seeing your later post, I wonder if you're talking 4g of cubes? I thought you meant 4g of ovoids.
In case you haven't experienced ps woodlovers before, high doses, at roughly 6-12 hours after ingestion, can cause neuromuscular impairment. I've had balance issues, trouble walking, serious visual distortions, loss of fine motor skills, and most terrifying of all, difficulty swallowing. I love woodlovers and enjoy high doses, but I'm new to ovoids and really want to avoid paralysis.

My sample size here is small, but I would agree with you guys on smaller fruits being stronger. And the really big ones seem to come with other problems: they're mass is a greater %-age water, they're more likely to be bug-ridden or rotten, and they're awkward and take up too much space in my bag or in my dehydrator.
With ovoids I'm aiming for the 2-6cm diameter caps and largely passing the monsters.

Guys I found a honey hole with ovoids everywhere..the problem is many have blackish/all black caps..
How do I distinguish between the ones that are just black because they dried out and the rotten ones?
What are your guys' thoughts on collecting the ones with blackish caps?
Does it mean they're unable to be eaten?
As of now I'm just cutting off the black caps and keeping the stems...
any advice is appreciated

This is just a theory...but I'm starting to think ovoids might do well with walnut as well as box elder in the right habitat.
I found a few fatties growing directly on walnuts in debris piles, and I've seen others here posting the same.
Today I was on a trail bordering a marsh w/ skunk cabbage, pretty far from the river, and not expecting to see ovoids, but lo and behold, there was a little clump growing on a small log and around some walnut shells. Looked up and it was two big walnut tress on either side of the trail.
This is my first year with these, curious if anyone else has noticed this association?

Treat the mushrooms like any other food product. If you wouldnt eat them raw dont dehydrate them and eat them. Think of them like a fruit, thats what they are afterall, would you pick a fruit before it has grown to size? Would you eat a fruit that was rotting, moldy, or infested with bugs?

I left out the shrooms that were softer than normal/squishy and kept them if they were firm...is that fine?

The mycelium is not very picky. The myc will devour any hardwood and I have even found them growing on pine. The box elder tree just seems to be their favorite food.

Got home from work Saturday evening, shortly after I thought it best to go hunting instead of speaking my mind. Went Thursday with a friend & got a few but with the high cold winds that day + the heavy frost the night before & the fact it was 6:40ish when I started = odds stacked against me.
I found about 20 or so but like previously, I really had to be diligant. The ones that wasn't dried out (the keepers) we're buried under the creeping Charlie & other weeds. Hard as hell to see or find. Never fails tho, you find 1 & then you see where you stepped on another.

As you know, I found a different location this year & tho I haven't had the opportunity to sample my fruits, other's have. 3 of them has had fresh & 1 has had both.
They all have experienced a weaker trip compared to the 1's from my previous spot which that's what I used for judgement on dosage (2-3 fresh).
Any thoughts on this?

I had a similar experience today. I found a new patch and made off with about 50 wet grams. But there was at least 4 times that in completely blackened and rotting ovoids. It was a major bummer.
I grabbed the ones that looked fine but I'm still a little sketch about a few. Photos of the day's haul are below. They are mostly firm but the caps on a few look a little ragged.
