Yes. Wood pile ovoids don't pop until we've reached consistent 70s or higher for a few days. Probably why we got an early first flush since it was in the 70s for a few days a week ago.
Ovoids will grow until we reach 90s for a few days in a row. Usually sometime in June.

Once you've found them you know where they like to hide. Once you've touched them and smelled them they are easier to identify.

Wow things dried up fast around SEPA...went out today and saw big patches already rotting and withering, and a week ago they seemed to be practically everywhere. Kinda kicking myself for waiting 5 days between hunts.
This is my first season with these, so curious to hear from others how long to wait for the 2nd flush?
I assume we would need a repeat of the same weather....3-4 days of steady high humidity and rain, with daytime temps pushing mid-60s, but wondering from more experienced hunters how long between fruiting in a healthy patch with good conditions?
Also really blown away by the morphological diversity of this species! Truly amazed that these two are the same species of mushroom, so weird.

Is it substrate and growing conditions that causes the wide range of cap shapes & stem thickness? They were found less than 50 yards apart...

I also was wondering about the recent temperatures. Visited a nearby park that is adjacent to water control feature ... results in a man-made flood plain. Plenty of downed tree trunks and branches of many species (pine, beech, oak, maple ... could be box elder but I need to revisit and check). Also noted a fair amount of knotweed. Plenty of wet spots, tiny streams, and swampy bits ... so in theory, it could/should be a good place. I did not find anything in the "stream bank" or other wet/dry areas ... on the way out I did find 1 shroom in a downed tree, but it was wet and basically disintegrated in my hand.
Also, while trudging around in that area, I saw many frogs, a ginormous centipede, lizards, and a garter snake (that was just relaxing in an open spot), and a pile of animal shit (was not deershit ... we have fox and coyote around, am guessing coyote shit).
I will say that it was fun to poke around in the woods ... like I did when I was a kid, a long time ago.

I've got to thank you for helping me find my first ones. What you just said about the weather would explain why the ones I found were kind of old.

Weather makes such a huge difference! I grow mushrooms in my yard and they are a good barometer telling me when to hunt. You need a steady 3+days of consistently high humidity (60%+) for ideal fruiting conditions for most any mushrooms growing outdoors.
For ovoids, they seem to prefer temps between 40 & 70 range, and I noticed the fattest fruits when we had heavy, steady rain for 1-2 days when temps were lower (40s-50s), followed by consistent humidity and warmer temps for 2-3 days (60s-70s). Those warmer days after the rain are the best ones to hunt, since they will be near peak growth.
If you get this weather pattern during ovoid season, clear your schedule & get out in that ideal habitat...they're in there somewhere.

For a dehydrator just set it on before going to sleep, turn it off when you wake up. Cracker dry. I don't believe you can harm their potency by leaving in an extra hour or two.

What do y'all do, if anything, to mitigate the possibility of picking up ticks (while you're trudging around on a hunt)?

I usually spray tick repellent. I also check my legs and clothes every few minutes. I got lyme diseases when I was younger, but lucky they caught it quick before it became a life long issue. Ticks are no joke. I hear some species can give you an allergy to meat. Stay safe everyone.

Is there a best temperature? This is my first season drying them. Last year I picked an obscene amount and I don’t want them to go to waste again.

I agree with this sentiment exactly. I wasted three years looking at logs when they almost never grow on logs.
