You want to get them between the time the cap starts to open till it is all the way open but not curling upwards like those. its okay to get them past their ripeness if they are dried out otherwise they will start to rot and or be infested by bugs. Only pick ripe mushrooms leave the pins and past due ones

Yes. Now that you've held them and smelled them etc they will a lot easier to find.
this was the #1 biggest key for me with actives on the whole. once you have examined a psilocybe in the flesh, you are set as far as knowing for what you're aiming for.
congrats to all the first timers, there's nothing like the trip on mushrooms you researched and searched for and then located on your own. beats the closet-grown experience 999 out of a 1000.

They are actually in good shape. And since they're my very first active find they will be eaten lol.

Congrats! I'm not far outside of Philly and I haven't seen a damn thing yet. I'm going to head to a park that's actually in Philly hopefully tomorrow, maybe that'll improve my luck. This is a noob question (first year hunting) but how long/when is generally considered the ovoid season in the Philly region? From when till when? I'm curious how long I'll be able to search this year.

That was always my moto when going hunting but this season kind of changed my opinion about mulch. Definitely a reliable way to find them and you dont have the risk of ticks n all that but the true hunting territory is the floodplain. Nature generates the mulch and perfect fruiting conditions, you can pick for miles on the floodplains without ever seeing another person. I always thought mulch was the way to go, and for beginners it definitely is but once you get past all that the endgame is to go to the rivers and fill trashbags all season long. In less than ideal locations this isnt always an option but if you live near the ohio river valley the floodplains will not disappoint.

Thats true, I was mostly talking about places outside of their natural habitats, like here in Jersey boxelders don't really grow a whole lot, so mulch in river parks is the way to go

So many little shriveled up pins! It's so depressing. I was able to get a few mature ones while they still had color today but darn. I went for a couple long hikes and drives to prospect locations the last couple days but ended up empty handed and right back to this year's mulch spot. Tomorrow is another day and another task of gas.

Starting to get the hang of this. It definitely isn’t easy so I don’t want people who are just getting started to be discouraged just because they don’t find anything their first few times or even first year. I only found a little over an eighth total after drying last year and went hunting 90+% of the time without success. I did however put in a ton of research and became more diligent in my searching of the ground when identifying the right habitat.
The major keys to finding ovoids seem to be putting yourself in the right spot and not half-assing your search. Once you find the water and flood plain you find the box elder, typically older ones that have dropped a lot of branches, then you thoroughly check the area around where the branches seem to have fallen. Now that I’ve had some success this year I’m starting to pick up on more specifics of where to look once I scan an area, also it is super easy to ID ovoids once you’ve had them confirmed for you.
Here’s some pics of today’s action. Some cool and supposedly rare log finds. There was a decent sized log that fell off a box elder sitting in a slight valley. Within 20 yards of the river the ground dipped down and created a valley that ran nearly parallel to the river itself, these valleys and other crevasse type areas of the flood plain seem to be promising.

People just getting started, understand this: if everyone that looked and didn’t find them posted about it, this thread would be five times as long as it it. You see people picking backpacks full because these are the people that have figured it out. That’s not the average, that’s the exceptional. KEEP LOOKING

My spot is flourishing and I found a small patch growing in the woods. I also found 3 morels which was pretty cool. I have never seen one before so finding 3 was a good feeling. It was a good day today.

Does anyone think this cold weather could be delaying fruiting?
