Ground temps warm up slower than air temps, try checking the ground temperature with a thermometer

Ok. .. on a side note, do you have any experience with ovoids in southern Ny?

I believe in Ny your best bet is to search mulched areas along rivers.  If you can identify box elder maple trees and can find a grove along a river I’d say it’s worth a look.  Can always take a look at MUshroom observer and see where documented finds might have been. Good luck out there.

I agree, that's what really intrigues me about the ones around the susquehanna.

The thing is, not only is that variety not unique to the susquehanna region, a discrete colony that I've observed for several years in VA changed appearance from the wavy cap form to the very bell shaped, pronounced nipple cap look from last year to this year.

Wow that's interesting, I haven't been foraging for them that long (3 years) to notice a change. Just been the bell/ "witch" caps as I like to call them.

Found these about 25 miles from Susquehanna, definitely a different variety,  than the Sus Valley "nipple" variety we've been finding. These have wavy, flattened out caps, thicker stems, and the edges of the caps really blue up nice when picked. Found some monsters, big boys today :mushroom2:

Curious, any species of trees other's are finding associated with voids? It seems fairly exclusive to box elder in specific habitats here in my area.

There's a few nippley in there, the smaller ones, others are the wavy cap. Beautiful patch! I've heard of people finding two different varieties next to each other just never seen a picture as clear as this.

The size and shape depends on the habitat, micro climate, substrate etc. Ive seen patches goes from the "nipple cap" ones to straight beefy stemmed monsters.

I have noticed that the stems are getting beefier than the past couple years around here.

Found this beautiful cluster today, biggest cap yet.

And here's a cute kitty:

NE Ohio, searching along the upper Ohio River area. I have boxelders, nettle, and boxwood about 2' high at this point. I'm 90% sure I'm doing this right.

Third season and no luck so far. Anyone local to the area want to adopt me? ha ha

There were hundreds if dried up pins and unharvestable fruits. It broke my heart lol. I searched the one stretch for 3 years now.  This is the first and im thinking what I thought were agrocybe last year, are ovoids. They're drying out with an orange color which you can see in the pics. Also that patch had very small fruits.  No taller than an inch and a half.

HAHA my wife went for the first time today, found her first ovoids a half hour in! I knew she'd have an eye for it.

I forgot to mention, 60 seconds after picking and putting my bag away, a police officer rolled past.  On a closed street that I was walking along.  I smiled and waved.  She smiled and waved.  She was kinda cute.  Now I've mentioned this before, take a fishing pole. Put on a fishing vest and throw some tackle (and empty bags) in a back pack.
