I'm taking a noob out today. I'm aiming for those oxbows in the river that wood gets deposited in and stuck in trees. A lot bigger than my other spot a lot wider and overgrown and looks promising.wish me luck.

Last night's haul, I left 2x as many pins as I took. They should be good in a couple days. Do dry stem butts work for planting? I was going to go out today in the rain and plant them but they have been drying out slightly. Never done it before, any advice would be awesome.

Still good! Maybe get them  in the ground, or on cardboard/substrate soon though.

Thanks! It is raining out quite nice, I'll plant what I can today and put the rest onto cardboard and plant later.

Went out to my local spot yesterday afternoon and they were everywhere.  Couldn't walk 10 ft. without stepping on any. Sure hope we don't get hit too badly with this new storm. It has the potential to completely wipe out my areas again like 2014. Calling for 2-4" of @#%# today.Fingers crossed....this pic was 2014....there were shad deposited 400 yards from the river bed.

Like Thayendangea said, hope we don't get the floods like 2014 cause it will stop the season.  Already starting to get water in the basement, not good.

Any preference or differences between eating ovoids dry or fresh? Before I ate fresh ovoids I've only ate dry, and was never really sure what kind they were. I've never had such crazy visuals before ovoids, and the body high was extreme. Was just wandering if to expect any drastic changes?

I'd prefer fresh, although my only experiences with them fresh has just been one or two small ones probably 1g-2g wet. Tastes a little better as well as going down easier and they seem a little more potent, compared to the equivalent .1-.2 dry.

Found a few more in Fairfax/Prince William county.

I'm jealous of all those who post pics of Ovoids that are relatively easily visible, mine are all hiding.

Even though I knew pretty much where these would be within a 5x5 area it still took me a while to find them because they were hiding so well, who knows how many I stepped on since that area is completely carpeted in celandine, beginning to hate the stuff.

Here's habitat pic

Unlike my other non mulch finds, which were all with 15 feet or less of the river, I found these about 50 or 60 feet away from the riverbank.

Whats going on everyone, Hunter for 3 years now in the Southeastern part of PA. I was wondering as I havent had any luck in 3 years, this year im going to do my part to really explore new areas. I have seen a bunch of posts about ideal habitat and have a good few places in mind. Real quick though, its been COLD at night here 39-34 degrees with highs topping out at 60. we had a few days of rain but it was cold rain like 42. The spots that normally sprout shrooms (not of ovoids but just in general) have been duds. Am I a bit to early you think? also Congrats to everyone who has found, I hope this year I strike some luck. I swear if I wasnt unlucky I wouldnt have any luck at all

Seems like you have the right idea.  Finding the right spot at the right time is a matter of persistence and sometimes luck.  Generally it's believed that daytime temps should be 60-80 degrees and consistent 40+ degree nights.

Finding the right habitat is absolutely key. Also important is to not have expectations of finding them.  I spent 5 years hunting these before I found my first spot. Admittedly I live in a place where they aren't as common. Point being, you gotta put in the work.

Perhaps you could take some photos of the areas you're focusing on and post them here. There's many people here with tons of experience hunting this species and they'll be happy to look at your habitat and make suggestions.

Good luck, I hope you find some this season! Don't get discouraged, the mushrooms are out there.

I live in southeast Pennsylvania too. Last year was my first year hunting ovoids and I got really lucky when I found my spot. The best you can really do is look for old mulch near a river (preferably with indicator species). That seems to be working for me. My spots haven’t started to fruit yet. Not even with pins.  I think the weather has been messing with us. But this upcoming week seems so promising. It’s been raining heavily every other day and the temperatures have been getting warmer and warmer. I think as long as the nights stay relatively warm it’s only a matter of time. Just keep getting out there as much as you can because the feeling of finding them is one I can’t describe.

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26520667

Good grab today filled up 3 of those plastic grocey bags. About 20lb wet in 2hrs. Some real big chonkers out there. Got pics but the main focus was picking. Not much of a photographer, if i bring my wife she will get better pics.

Hi fellow mushroom people...I've sparked motivation to go and hunt from these posts - only problem is I'm in NY and not sure if finding any ovoids here is actually a realistic scenario.

So the main question I have is if they are somewhat findable in NY, what is the likely hood that this species of mushroom is/has ever grown in the areas I'll be looking at? (assuming I search in their correct habitats)

basically, am I being unrealistically optimistic in hoping that I might find some ovoids in my small Ny town..?
