Interesting. My one and so-far only find had a mix of cap colors. The spot was in a floodplain by a very small side creek, BUT it was on the edge of a mulched trail. I'm guessing there's some kind of mix of substrate happening there.
I'm planning on doing some propagation. My first target is an area with a very large amount of pale hardwood mulch. Maybe I should exclusively drop stembutts with the darker caps? If tannins were the cause of dark caps, the new fruiting bodies would likely have light caps.

The Facebook mushroom ID group is currently being flooded with ovoid finds. Looks like we are in the heart of the season.

New to the thread, thought I'd post some voids from around Northern MD. I do believe peak season is upon us

I found some other's in another area, but they were much harder to identify with the features I would typically use. The above variety I love because of how bold they are.

Looks like the season is kicking off for everybody. I’ve had some luck already with some really niced sized ovoids. Unfortunately I’m not going to be uploading many pics this year. I have trouble uploading them all the time and the monotony of it just gets annoying lol. I might make a highlight post towards the end of the season of my best finds but that’s gonna be it. But like I said I’ve found some big ovoids already and it’s really early to be finding them like that in my spots. It’s gonna be a good season.

I’m so jelly down here in southern MD 🥺 I’ve been walking all around searching but still haven’t found any. I’ve found a few semi look-a-likes and a bunch of morels. I guess easy access to crabs and rockfish balance things out a bit ; )

I hear you, I've been perusing Shroomery for the better part of 5 years and haven't actually contributed until now because of how time consuming the learning curve for the platform seemed.
Look forward to your wrap up photos from the season! Happy hunting

Pulled 15lb wet no stembutts today, picked until my fingers bleeding then kept going. It is actually really laboir intensive doing all kinds of ypga poses while you are picking and trying not to crush the pins. This season is insane. Finding ovoids in every havitat along all the rivers in western pa. This mild winter and early spring combo made the perfect storm.

No luck in NY yet but it's just getting warmer, maybe May will be the month. Been searching the edges of mulch where it washes out

it's one, but we all know where that leads.. Another fella was in the area pulled more than I and some morels but was cool to meet a fellow wild shroomer

I wish I took another pic of the pins around this one, I've never seen them with dark blue/black caps before at least in pin stage. (Not in this pic^^^, just slightly off the side.)

This'll be my first time planting a stem butt but should be good to go. Anybody have any information on planting these/ personal experience that has worked? If it's anything like planting a bush or tree I'll be fine, just not sure if it's any different.

The black capped ovoids are a distinct strain of ovoid. I find quite a lot In this area and they dominate some creeks. They tend to produce girthy stout fruits with thick stems. They were all I found the other day.

That's beautiful, any difference in the habitat from regular ones you'd find? The one pin I didn't get in the picture was likely bruised and not the same type you have pictured here. It still had a little orange/brown in the cap, and the cap wasn't completely dark like these. Sadly, I went back to those pins today and they were gone. Probably stepped on but possibly picked yesterday before I could get back, not sure.

I mean I find the black and cream capped ones (and also an Orange capped variety that is much less common) in the same habitats, but they are usually grouped with their own kind. I don’t tend to find two types right next to each other.
Also, black capped stem butts produce black capped colonies in future years.

My best spot just started popping in central PA literally 2 days ago. Had an early spot producing for about a week but here is the first flush from my best spot yesterday.

Hang in there guys. Things stalled for a bit here and are now on their way north. When this spot takes off ill be bringing out bags of these things.
