I always hear people say to steer away from roadside fruits. Every once in a while someone will say eating them doesn't have any ill effects. Is this all hearsay or does anyone have any sources?

"The scientists found no significant differences in the metal levels when comparing mushrooms collected from different substrates, habitats and localisations. The only exception was with thorium, which accumulates more in mushrooms which grow on wood (such as Hypholoma fasciculare or Gymnopilus spectabilis) than in those which have contact with the organic material of the soil (Tricoloma ustaloides and Pisolithus arrhizus)."

not sugarland run but there are definitely a lot of similar looking climates in my area. thanks for the information though, i'm probably going to check a few more areas before the season really kicks up here. might try some larger rivers in my area instead of small streams like that one

That's Correct, Mushrooms Don't Soak Up Chemicals/Contamination From The Substrate. Mushrooms Don't Have "Root Systems" Like Plants.
However, Mushrooms Can Have Heavy Metals In Them, But So Do Fish From The Gulf Coast Waters. Likely Not Enough To Harm You.
The Only Time You Should Be Cautious Of Picking Mushrooms Growing Beside A Road, Is If It Is A Main Road Or Highway With Alot Of Traffic. Some City Trucks Spray Chemicals As They Drive Down The Street, Which Can Land On The Mushrooms.
However, A Small, Lightly Traveled Road Should Not Have Such Trucks Passing By. It Is Possible Though.
The Chemicals Cannot Be Boiled Off The Mushrooms, That Would Be Like Making Shroom Tea, But Adding Some Gasoline & Hoping The Water Boils It Out.

Those are some very good looking mushrooms, great find
There’s nothing inherently toxic about a cigarette butt.

I'm not sure what point you think this makes, as this says they do accumulate metals, whether it's at a greater rate or not doesn't change that

I’m with doctorghosty in this one. Mycoremediation is a thing because it was studied and found to be valid.
Sounds like various species, degrade, accumulate and convert various chemicals and metals. I think it could be safely assumed that this applies to more species and contaminants than just what was covered in the article.

this is incorrect.
Heavy Metals Accumulate More In Some Mushrooms Than In Others
Was just about to post the same link.
You may not have any problems eating them. But there is that chance for them to be present. And it may not cause damage right away either. Could be months or years before they show any signs of it.
Just better to be safe than sorry.

We’re not eating these things as part of our diet. A small amount of contamination isn’t going to hurt you. It’s like fish. You don’t want to eat it every day but once in a while is fine.

Got a few hundred mature fruits today, we got some hail and snow its been cold as fuck past few days. Alot of the pins have stalled but its supposed to warm up soon so it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

I stand corrected. I still dont think some exhaust fumes are going to make you sick unless you are picking next to a superhighway and even then its doubtful. At the very least you can still get prints and stem butts from them

So far this season we've found plentiful specimens at known spots on two different VA rivers, and today we found a very large fruiting area on the Rappahannock River which is a first for me.
About 3 years ago I was much more green and seeded many locations on the Rapp, but just havent been back during peak season to check them. But today we observed ovoids on the Rapp about 25 miles away from those seeded locations and it was good to notch my headboard for that waterway.
It seems the only places flushing well right now are the earliest of early spots. Might be shaping up to be a very good season once we really get into the swing of proper flushes in most locations.
GL everyone.

Had to delete a lot of pics, but will get more.

It would, but is very unlikely with ovoids IMO.
I have a few logs that put out specimens of one look early in the season and a different appearance later, and the sequence of appearances is random from year to year.

Good job! Wow, these look so different from what I'm finding in MD. What area are you in?
