Did 10 miles on the Allegheny floodplain today, not much action, found a lot of promising spots tho, brushed at least 100 ticks off my legs. Gonna hit the southern part of the mon tomorrow things are a bit further down there.

Northwest DC suburbs. I've only started hunting last year. I have 2 good spots so far, but there are SO many good looking spots just like them in the area, I'm surprised it's somewhat hard to find fruiting spots.

Are you using protection, as in some kind of repellent?  Will you use some tommorow?

Not trying to be a nag but here is some tips...

1.  Wear light colored cloths, preferably pants NOT SHORTS = Easier to spot ticks
2.  Tuck pant legs into socks & tuck shirt into pants
= Keeps them & Chiggers out
3.  Use a repellent, especially Bellow your knees,
arms & waist area - Deep woods OFF, etc.
4.  Tie new Dryer sheet to hat, belt loop & shoes. You
Can also rub it around your neck, ears & exposed
    Arms = gnat's & mosquitoes hate it.
5.  Every 5-10 mins = Give yourself a
Quick scan over to find/remove hitchhikers

6.  Once home = Remove cloths & wash
them in HOTTEST water cycle.  Then check
    Yourself THOROUGHLYfor any possible
    Hitchhikers

Lastly, use a Walking-Stick.  They are a useful tool for not only hicking assistance but foraging & locating/repelling snakes.

Sounds like a slight false start to the season. Just enough to get us all excited enough to let us down. Good news is that regardless we are all less than a month out now at most. I'm guessing by easter where I'm located. That was my guess all along but watching the finds march up the coast has me all excited.

Last year was my first year so I have nothing to compare to. I know they were found april 30th last year. I found my first one may 1st and found at least 1 every single day until around the end of june very beginning of july. Seems reasonable with everything ahead of schedule to see some around the 15th.

I watched a documentary on YouTube of mushroom hunting for 30 days. It was actually very interesting, regardless the YouTuber hunts in Ohio for 30 days...most of the habitats were mulch’s at parks. The major honey pot he found in Ovoids was in a public park (no freshwater observed nearby)  So far from this thread it seems that most people hunt mulch’s near freshwater....

Is freshwater necessary? It seems like the mulch is the major requirement for these little guys. Searching in NC Coastal area right meow.

I got so many ticks on me hunting ovoids last year. Lots of Lone Stars. Ended up contracting alpha-gal. Just because it's not a deer tick doesn't mean you're safe, keep those ticks away guys!

If you're finding them in mulch far from fresh water, that just means the mulch or wood colonized somewhere else near water.  A lot of county park systems have 1 central facility that does the mulching and then distributes it out to other parks.  In my area I found a few parks with massive colonized or fruiting mulch piles that seem to be the origin for the other parks. You should find out where the main office for your county park is.  Look at it on google maps and try to find an area that seems like it's where maintenance is.  This trick worked out well for me.

Yeah my local park mulch pile is colonized with ovoids and they spread it around everywhere

One year we had a torrential downpour and a lot of the mulch washed into the woods. This was the result the next spring

Is that a permanent condition?

Fellow GA hunters, do you guys see a lot of ticks? I have had to pull off like 3 total in some 11 years of hunting various mushrooms. Am I just lucky or do we have way less ticks down here?

Apparently people lose sensitivity over several years, it's still pretty new to science though so nobody's 100% sure. For now though I'm off all mammal meats

I pull off 5-10 everytime I come out of the woods and just two days ago I pulled the first lone star that I have seen this year it was crawling up towards my chest ...but I was roaming an area that has lots of deer that rest which is usually where the lone stars like to hide out
