Well Maryland has issued a mandatory stay at home order but there is an exception for hiking alone.

Tip: carry a plastic grocery bag along with your paper specimen bags. Pinch the stem butt off, drop it in the plastic bag, and put the mushrooms in your paper bag.
You'll end up eating a lot less dirt and it makes cleaning so much faster. 90+% of the ones I collect dont need any additional cleaning.

I know this isnt an I'd thread, I'm just posting this to see if its ovoids by people who know better. These were posted on facebook near altoona for those keeping track. They were on facebook posting pics. They look like galerina or ovoids to me and if they are ovoids like I believe that means they are on our doorsteps gentlemen.

Thank you. I figured but without better pictures of the stem and such I cant tell as some of the phenotypes of ovoids seem to be close to that shade of brown in some photos.

Finding ovoids all over a log like that would be quite peculiar indeed

Ovoids almost never grow on logs like that. I’ve been doing this for ten years, and aside from those weird ones that grow in PA, I’ve seen them growing like that once.

Those are galerina. You can tell for sure by seeing a gill shot, which isn't there but they are growing on the log the same way I've seen thousands of galerina grow.

Plus, that log isn't partially buried like one would normally see when ovoids fruit from logs.
I only find ovoids fruiting from logs when the log is partially buried and partially to mostly decayed and it is a box elder log. I never find them on elevated logs that aren't crumbling, no matter any other conditions.

That's prolly because you really don't look for logs and stay mostly to the mulched stuff. They grow like that tho in natural habitats in all of the producing states on the East coast. Log clusters are where it's at out in the wild.

Not seeing them on logs would be more peculiar lol

Well ... Found a lil baby cluster of pins today. They were in an early spot at an early location, so it's looking like a week or so till MD is in full swing (depending on precip). Other than these, there wasn't any other ovoids around. We did see some beautiful specimens of Galerina tho. Still no Dryads saddle yet, but I'm sure they'll be right around the corner as well.

Forgot to mention to you that the dryads were juuuust barely beyond pinning stage at most spots we visited Saturday.
I pickled some three or four years ago and want to again, so I was specifically looking for them.

Yeah I only found three in a very sunny spot. It will be another week before they are out in force.

That's incredibly curious. I was wondering how close tondryad saddle they were in terms of blooming. Last year I found tons of dryad saddle before my first ovoids, but it was my first year hunting and I was wondering around aimlessly staring st the ground and logs. I was under the impression that they mostly grew on logs in the wild and pa was the strange state where they grew out of the buried debris appearing as though it came out of the ground. You guys have me totally stoked. They are so close to popping here I can smell them.
