Gonna have to go back for better pics and to rip some myc for cloning, its ironic bc I was shopping for cyan spores today only to find the growing under my toes.

Feels like spring out here right now, the voids are loving it.
Within 30 seconds of walking into the floodplains I found a unopened cold beer and some fat ass voids in a dirbs pile.

You are morally obligated to shotgun that beer!

¹ Another good day out here. Electric leaf blowers are the best tool this time of year, cant believe I ever hunted without one. Actually more fruits now than spring time which is saying alot. They are all hiding beneath the leaves. When you hit the ground with it everything except the mushrooms gets stripped away, almost like it was meant to be. Cool to see the mycelium networks thriving in these conditions.

All the rivers I've been hunting around I notice the shore line is always very rocky with little areas of sandy or soft soil until you venture further from the river.
I'm wondering if my lack of luck so far is based on sub-optimal habitats, anyone with more experience know if my hunch is correct?

They enjoy growing on the buried wood in sandy river soil, also in the piles of driftwood that decompose further from the shore in the rich black forest dirt. My favorite place to hunt is right where the river sand meets this rich soil. The optimal distance from the water depends on many factors, such as the vertical height from the water and the flood patterns of the particular water body, but also on the weather and time of year. One habitat I've particularly enjoyed hunting lately, the grassy plains above the floodplains where tall grass, and knotweed dominated during the summer. This time of year the foliage is dead and the grass makes an excellent casing layer. These habits are only present in places where humans have altered the natural landscape, gas pipe lines and power lines are usually the suspect.
Some of the smaller streams I hunt are very rocky, obviously the mushrooms wont grow in this kind of environment, but if there is wood that is left ashore after big floods I would look there.

These look so much like cyans, like how can you tell them apart from the cyans in this post for example

You need microscopy to be sure, but there are a few distinct features, much easier when you have them in person.

Actually after seeing shroomhunts post that you mentioned, I started to wonder if they were cyans as well. They are much more golden/orange hued than my other ovoid spots as well as more dense clusters. I had found ovoids last year on November 6th that were stereotypical. We’ve had some freezes tho, so I just assumed that the cold snap made them look atypical. Also, these are in a spot that doesn’t see much sun.. so they don’t have those sun bleached tops that older ovoids get.
I’m skeptical as well. Thank you for mentioning it polaritymind. I’m going to have to investigate further for sure. Cyans are not native to Ohio, but I really don’t see why they couldn’t be. I’m gonna have to pop back down there and have another look 👀and do some more research on cyans.

So, I made a decent bed at my home from my meager finds this spring, consisting of stem butts, and a bunch of colonizing material from the actual site, and I have been feeding it old hardwood, and debris that gathers on the side of the creek bank.
When I dig down into it all, I can clearly see lots of white wispy mycellium, so I know it either likes what I'm feeding it, or that it's mycellium from other mushrooms.
My area of Kentucky is devoid of ovoids! The drive to find them is over 30 miles north of me, which is no big deal when you drive, but I don't, so it's virtually impossible for me to get a ride to my spots every season.
This all being said, what are the chances that my patch could fruit this coming spring? Can they fruit the following year, or does it usually take more than one season?
I know this isn't a post of any ovoids that I've found, but I figured that some of you guys probably know the answer to my questions about growing them regardless, so I figured I'd just post this here

Dang! Oh well. I reckon that I'll just try to find a way to my spots again next season.
Thanks for the reply

Try to transplant all the mycelium you can, no point going that far out, if you keep the myc in tact it will continue to fruit. Just remove it in large sections as not to disturb it.

Yeah man, I will go again this upcoming season at least one time when the season starts here, I'm fairly certain. So I'll bring home more myc, and throw all the stem butts in another addition to my already made patch to make it bigger
I'm going to check on my patch tomorrow and see how it's doing. it's about to get cold as heck here soon!

They like the cold main thing is to keep it moist. The myc should freeze and thaw without issue.
