Millet jars were a fail :(
    #26470634 - 02/05/20 04:31 PM (4 years, 11 days ago)

Well I believe my jars failed. One of them was already about 25 to 30 percent colonized, I gave it a shake and some polyfil strands fell into it (I packed it tight), plus some of the burst millet grains turned into a mush against the glass. All this time and work... this sucks...

Let it sit for a few days man grains burst a bit at that stage may not kill it.

Well I already had a few burst grains at the bottom to begin with, that didn't worry me because I know some burst grains are acceptable and aren't going to hurt. But when I shook the jar the already burst grains got more smashed up at the bottom and got smashed all along the side of the jar. It's like a piece of mush smashed against the glass, I hope it doesn't interfere with anything, not to mention some polyfil strands got mixed in because I was shaking it and inevitably hit the top of the lid. Does mixed polyfil strands interfere with colonization?

If its turning to mush, you may have a bacterial issue. Pics will help.

Yeah it may have started to ferment. No the poly will not in anyway hurt the grains.

This is what happened, the burst grains seemed to clump together and when I did the shake it mashed the burst grains even more. Throw away because it will cause bacteria?

Before the burst grains weren’t like this, they were sitting mixed in at the bottom. When I shook, this is what happened. It just smashed the already burst grains even more and against the glass. My other jars have some strands of polyfil that mixed with the spawn from hitting the top of the lid and polyfil. This is why I think it’s a fail.

It’s going to start to fermenting because of this? Pictures above.

For sure I definitely am. How will I know everything is good though and progressing correctly? Should the mycelium colonize and encompass this whole spot? Or will it just always be like that? How will I know that there hasn't been any damage done?

Or will it just always be like that against the glass and the mycelium will avoid it? How will I know that there hasn't been any damage done and the growth is healthy?

I'm not sure why you're stressing. I don't know anything about millet, but grain is grain. As long as it was sterilized the mycelium isn't going to care about broken grains.

Relax.

Take the foil off now also........it has served its purpose.

It’s gonna be ok.

if it doesn’t completely colonize and stalls shake the fuck out of it and dislodge the stuck shit.  If it still doesn’t decide to be fully colonized a few day later fruit it in the jar.

If it smells like shit or turns really wet or black or not-white or technicolor get rid of it.

No matter what, it’s gonna be fine.
