SF Area: 2 ID requests
    #26466061 - 02/02/20 10:29 PM (4 years, 14 days ago)

First ID request is mainly as a sanity check:
1) Same spot as previous find in December: Ps. Cyanscen
2) Another mushroom with large flush nearby to #1
Second ID is mainly out or curious to learn similar habitat species.

Area: SF Peninsula

Species #1:
----------
Saw a few pins over the last week or so, had been waiting for more and further growth.  However, looks like a person or animal damaged two of the 3 - so picked the three:

Spore: Purple
Bruises: Blue

Earlier pins / growth before picking:

Picked and spore print:

Species #2
-----------

- Viscous surface, nearly gelatenous
- Spore print: yellow-brown
- Bruising: some browning of stem. (Had hoped for purple from the color left on lower specimens

.

Spore print:

Those first 2 photos are Cyanescens! Nice. Obviously wait for a TI as well.

Not sure what the second one is, but Armillaria would have a white print.

Additional comments on #2
  - The print took a while did it over probably about 16 hrs. And of o recall correctly - once picked they dried out pretty fast turning a bit more brown.
  - good comment on the white spore aspect, especially for the lower one which barely have a print) perhaps I should have used aluminum foil which worked well when testing A. Muscaria before.
  - had they produced a blue bruise or purple print - I would have taken more specimens for a more rigorous test.  (They're probably still there)

I don't think #2 is armillaria mellea as I didn't see any rings Round the stipe/stem.

Regardless, breeg is right, it’s not A. mellea. Doesn’t have a white spore print.
Jesus Christ... I’ve been overlooking simple major key features recently. I should take a break from ID’ing.

i think you should do quite the opposite, keep trying and sharpen your skills in the process.
No need to back out just because you stumble a little.

Practice, practice! :mushdance:

I agree, I know that I'm not perfect all the time on my Identifications  I admit my mistakes and do my best to learn from them. It seems easy to identify from pictures but it's not always so.

For me it is crucial to have trustworthy and preferably updated references at hand. Identification based
on pictorial similitude usually works fine with the easily recognizable species, but with a whole lot of
species there are plenty of minute details that are hard to remember unless you are some kind of a
human myco dictionary.

Thanks all. I appreciate it. The LBMs and distinct looking species aren’t too bad; it’s the medium sized ones I keep missing. I just need to slow down and rework my deduction & elimination process.

I do much better with a good reference. I should keep one closer by.
It’s too bad all the comprehensive monographs and guides are old as shit. I picked up How to Know the Gilled Mushrooms (circa 79’) a few weeks ago and it’s one of the best references I’ve seen in a long time.

Now that cell phone coverage is pretty good in my area, I use the internet on phone constantly while in the field instead of toting extra books and things.
