Electric sterilizers? set it and forget it?
    #26468884 - 02/04/20 05:09 PM (4 years, 12 days ago)

I was curious if the electric steam sterilizers are truly set it and forget it devices? I would hope so considering the price tag.

I was told this is true but not sure if it is? I would be willing to shell out $900 to not have to sit there and watch the damn PC for 3 hours when doing bags. They also come in 41 qt size which would be awesome.

I love my PC cycle as I always plan 1.5 to 3 hours other mush prep to get it all out of the way in one go.  Prep coir, spawn boxes, lable shit.  My best use of time is to run  a agar petri run, dump that in front of the Flow hood, prep PC for jars/bags and get the agar work done.

I get what you are saying but it would feel like lazy cultivation to me and I cant work like that.

yes they are set aand forget for the most part...

you will still have to vent steam for 10 min before closing the valve.
then when building pressure you have to find the sweet spot with the dial to get the right psi. Once you've ran it a couple times you should figure out where it needs to be and then you can just leave it there and even tape it in place.

Also I have a digi timer to turn it off. I've found it takes about 20 min to get from 0 psi to 15+ psi so I just set the timer when I close the vent and add 20 min for the build up time.

What he said. Another bonus is that they are quiter. They are also more efficient because they heat from the inside so you lose less heat. In addition, you can use them where ever you can run a power cord.

one thing to note is the heat up time is much longer than my presto pcs. Usually takes at least a half an hour to start venting steam. Not much of a downfall, just a little extra time to account for. Good luck buddy I highly recommend them. ESPECIALLY WHEN STERILIZING BAGS. for me it is a must. They come out nice and uniform and with a nice tight vacuum on them. no warping of bags at all. and much less condensation/burst grains caused from cooling too fast.

You won't regret buying the 41 quart electric steriliser. I love mine and it's great to be able to sterilise a lot of grain at once.

Is the max pressure 15PSI On these? Is all american the only brand that makes them? I cant seem to find any other companies that make the 41 qt electric sterilizers.

The max pressure is 20PSI. I tried looking for other autoclaves but they were more expensive and smaller. It looks easier and cheaper to buy new parts for an All American and fix it yourself should anything need replacing.

My 25x doesn't hold a constant PSI very well at all. It varies by at least 4 PSI between heating/cooling cycles. If you're cooking grain, it really doesn't matter if it gets up to 24PSI, but with Agar, not so much.

Hearing you all describe it, maybe I need a new Thermostat. I did order the new style stopcock. The old one dribbled water droplets.

Damn, man. That's a lot more grain than what can be done in jars. Maybe I need to change to myco-bags.

Do I have to use the inner container on the 75x? Is it safe to use with out it?

I normally use 2.5 qt bags, any idea how many I can squeeze into this 41qt PC? Maybe 12 to 14 2.5 qt bags?

Ive been using the inner liner it seems to be going well.
Im so fucking glad I made the purchase, the 75x is great.

Is it normal for it to take 2 hours or longer to cool down?

If you want to make your 75x set it and forget it you should build a PID controller for it. I have one on mine and its dope. I just set the temp, the time, vent the steam then go about my business (or go to bed). Basically it lets you set the temperature then once it reaches that temp it will start a timer and keep it there until the timer runs out then it turns off. When I first got my 75x I was a bit disappointed because I was expecting a set it and forget it experience, this makes it exactly that. It’s been a huge game changer. If you want help building one shoot me a PM.

And to answer your last question, yes it typically does take around 2+ hours to cool depending on how much stuff you have loaded into it. I sometimes use the inner liner and sometimes don’t, just depends on how much I am trying to cook!

(Please disregard my notes on the PID, my calibration is a little off and I also use it to run my huge 130gal steamer.)
