Been meaning to get a new hard drive for awhile, have a big HDD that is getting close to full. Hoping to find something with at least 1 TB for a decent price, whatever is the best deal/quality really.
My PC is a dell Inspiron 3650, it has 3 expandable slots on the back but I don't know the specs.

This looks like a good deal. Im pretty sure its for desktops and not laptops: https://m.ebay.com/itm/SanDisk-SSD-Plus-SATA-III-2-5-1TB-Internal-Solid-State-Drive-SDSSDA-1T00-G26-/293448369124?_mwBanner=1&_rdt=1
An HP 1TB SSD Drive: https://m.ebay.com/itm/HP-S700-2-5-1TB-SATA-III-3D-TLC-Internal-Solid-State-Drive-SSD-6MC15AA-ABC-/293045671996?_mwBanner=1&_rdt=1
It blows my mind that a 1TB SSD drive is only $100. Just a few years ago, this same drive would have cost a lot more. Technology is rapidly accelerating in quality and performance, its flippin' wild.

If you want performance and reliability you should spend a little more for Samsung EVO drives. These days they come with a 5 or 10 years warranty depending which model you get.

Buy a cheap-ish SSD to run software on, then build out a nice NAS.
In the long run you'll be ahead. I have 24tb in my NAS currently, my PC is only 500gb. If you love music as your handle describes, then it's money well spent.

So far I have been leaning towards a samsung, was eying this one but still going to look around: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-SSD-860-QVO-1TB-SATA-III-2-5-Internal-Solid-State-Drive-MZ-76Q1T0-new/223499940200?hash=item3409a27168:g:4TUAAOSwbURcyKdc

Crucial MX500 has been my go to.
Quote:
Tom’s Hardware said: Crucial matched the EVO's five-year warranty period, but the MX500 has a much higher endurance rating. You can write 700TB to the 2TB MX500 before exhausting the warranty, which is more than twice the 2TB EVO's endurance. The 1TB models follow the same formula, but the lead shortens in the smaller capacities. In either case, Crucial leads across the board.

Unless you are running a data center you aren’t wearing out an SSD. I have 7 year old SSD’s that have been on nearly 24/7 for that 7 years and they run without issue. Besides, who’s trying to get 5 years out of an SSD? Modern movies are 50-100gb. Games can be the same. That’s gong to grow from here. Storage is cheap. Buy cheap storage. Upgrade it often. If you want to store large sums, do it on a NAS where you can buy mechanical drives and run them in raid if you need read/write speed.

The Crucial is 100 bucks for the 1TB, that’s pretty standard.

Crucial may lead with the M2 and high capacity disks, but Intel and Samsung EVO own the standard sata SSD range.

Have been happy with both Samsung evo and crucial in my old MacBook Pro
If you can find a good deal on the Samsung grab it
Get a $10 usb hard drive enclosure and turn your old hard drive into a 1tb external backup drive while you’re at it

Should I open up my PC first before buying a new drive just to make sure it will be compatible?
Been researching the Inspiron 3650 but still having trouble finding too much info about the expandable slots, they are definitely 2.5" though.
So in theory all I should need is the SSD and a sata cable correct? Tempted to buy one now but might wait a bit more to make sure it will work.

You shouldn’t need the cable unless it’s missing or broken. There’s already one in there.

I want to add a second internal hard drive, not replace the current one entirely. I've got a 2TB HDD so it would be pretty spendy to replace it with an SDD, and I need more space anyways.
The samsung SDD I am eying doesn't seem to come with any cables which is why I was wondering.

Cables are like one or two dollars if you miss one. Normally you get a bunch with a mobo anyway.

Ah got it
I’d highly recommend installing your OS on and running on the new SSD and using the old 2tb HD for storage, but I’m sure you already are doing that.
I couldn’t believe how much faster my older computer got when I switched to ssd. It’s a 2011 base model MacBook Pro and it is running a very recent version of OS X and works like a brand new computer, it’s fast. It was running like shit before the ssd. I also put 16g of ram in which helps a lot. On a side note, that’s why I keep buying Apple computers. Nothing else holds up that long, in my experience - 9 years old and works better than new.

Theres even a newer bootable SSD drive called a NAND SSD drive which actually plugs directly into the motherboard! https://m.ebay.com/itm/WD-Blue-3D-NAND-1TB-Internal-SSD-SATA-III-6Gb-s-M-2-2280-Solid-State-Drive-W-/302420757563?_mwBanner=1&_rdt=1
Now thats some next-level booting
