Sorry to keep posting, but with so many opposite opinions, it sounds like we might all be able to learn something from this one. This is the 2nd transfer of same culture

That clear margin around the edge is still mold. Nice pic of that sneaky bastard. For science you should try to transfer it.

Here is a very informative thread about a clear margin: Read this post until the end. This growth turned out to be mold (with pictures). However, I've experienced clear margins described here which turned out to be cube myc. In that post I talk about the previous thread incorrectly (it was still an ongoing thread at the time and I misread the post). From these two examples I think you can compare what acceptable clear margins are and unacceptable. In looking at your plates after reading these posts, your growth looks more like a contam to me... But there is still some uncertainty there. If it changes color, we'll know. If it doesn't, then we will still be uncertain... Good luck!

The clear margin pictured in this post and the one in your second link that turned out to be cube myc are quite a bit different. Yours was more milky/fuzzy. The one pictured in the last photo in this post is shiny/clear/glassy. It can only be seen if the light is shining at the proper angle, and cannot be seen when backlit. This one is mold, I know it well because it's kicking my ass. Also I have it isolated (accidentally) as a satellite contam where the transfer touched off-center when being placed on the dish. It is its own beautiful little glassy culture without the cube myc overlay. I don't know it's effects on cube myc, because I'm trying not to feed it any grain and find out.

I think you're right, LadysKnight. Do you have pics of your clear margin contamination? That and the isolated version? Posting it here may tie this thread up nicely.

I really wish I could take decent pics, especially of that clear mold, I've tried, I just don't have that ability. I wore out the search trying to figure it out, but opinions seem to have always been mixed, even amongst TCs. I'm just surprised to finally see a good picture of it, like trying to photograph a ghost. I am going to keep trying and to further isolate/identify/photograph it. Keep fighting the good fight.
Afterthought: The likelyhood of seeing a contam like this through anything but a perfectly clear petri (glass or plastic) is nill.

The clear margin is not mold. The snotty stuff like that is a good sign. Healthy transfers so far. Here are some close up shots of rhizo tips emerging from snotty transparent margins.

from this plate here...

Which turned into these...

Good luck and keep on truckin'.

Hey, nice pics, but that's definitely something different. While sorta glassy, it's also very rhizomic. Looks much more like mushroom myc, even though clear. I'm sure there are many variations of clear margins, some benign, some mold. I see I'm just getting to know one of them.

Word. Great pics. I say the main culture is mush myc, the sexy clear halo around it is mold.

Definitely mold in there. You could save the culture still at this point if you transfer a few pieces of the middle colony to new plates. I've cleaned up worse lots of times. Wild prints are often riddled with other critters.
