they are spread out fairly decent, but could be a bit thinner and I use a 20" fan also to speed it up. They seem ok when Put into paper towel just a couple tiny bits of moisture on the towel. Ill definitely add more dry time.
I plan to use some 2x4's to make a nice big frame and put a screen over it. For now I stapled some screens over some tupperware bins.. gets the job done for now.

More spread out grains are during drying, the faster they'll dry.
In winter i'll let them sit a full day in a strainer stirring occasionally just to make sure the exteriors are dry after hydrating. Summer's little easier since heat and direct sunlight will make quick work of it.
Just keep working on it and you'll find your sweet spot.
Right on. The most common mistake of preparing any grain is not compensating for exterior moisture. Oats need a little more tlc than other grains in that regard.
As for contamination, even if you're grain prep is on point, it won't much matter without a clean inoculant.

Spawning shitty grain isn't worth it if you're running more than a couple tubs. The time it takes to prep subs, clean tubs, and wait 2 weeks just for it to tam on you is enough reason to chuck shitty spawn.

Those 10 bags were from my last grow and I tossed them cause I wasn't confident in them. The growth was all fucky, pooling metabs, and they just didnt look right and spawning them wasn't worth the effort it takes for them to just tam out down the line.
It's a serious loss and it sucks but it's better to toss now than waste coir, time, and hope.
If that's your only bag and you only grow a tub or 2 at a time, then i guess spawning aint that bad of an idea.

mycopiss said: Any grain prep tips would be appreciated. I have ran the PC for oat prep about 10 times so far, still really new at this.
It seems bags are harder than jars but can fit much more in the PC.
Im drying oats for around 1.5 hrs, doing 2.5 hrs in the PC, wrapping the bags and bottom of PC in towels. Should I try drying longer?
I've also been told at higher altitude that the PC needs to be ran higher at 17-18 PSI. Is this true? Would I have to possibly PC it for more than 2.5 hrs as well?
I know baking and cooking in general at higher altitude is different and can take longer.
Rinse with boiling water or at least max-hot tap water, then spread out on an old towel. 30-60 min wait max.
Edit: ops, you’re talking about oats, so the timing can be different. I use WBS.

I still don't get the advantage of oats over, say millet. I read a lot about hydrating and drying and simmering and boiling but I can't see why that's needed.
I bring water to boil, take it of the hot plate. Dump my millet in and let it steep for one hour. Then I drain it into a sieve, shake a bit and let it sit for 15-30 mins. Put it in jars PC and that's it. No waiting, no checking moisture, nothing. And I had no contams with millet spawn. (Except for one time, when I knew that my inoculant dish was bacterial but still tried to fruit, bc I read it would work )
Before I learned about the shroomery I watched this guy on youtube to get my unmodified mono going. This is where I have this "TEK" from:

The shells on some of the oats come off after soaking for 12+ hours, is this bad?
Also, is it ok to fan the oats when drying to speed up the process?

It's fine. Also, fanning is okay. I usually put on a screen outside for a moment and they're good.
Consider an easier oat prep with no soak. Just boil, cool down and PC.

I think we are all way off the point that it's not the grain prep here. You have mold growing in your spawn. It's probably contaminated because you used spore syringes right? Like you didn't get this from agar did you? Also bags should be 15 psi for 3 hours at sea level.

Just about 10 mins. I wait until I don't really see steam coming off of them.
I agree, though. I would say if your agar plates are really clean, it's gotta be something during grain inoculation.

If youre referring to the pics from the op youre mistaken.
Judging by those pics alone those bags are sick. Af.
