If they're properly dry and stored, they'll last decades.

Seeds will harden over time and there are methods of getting good germ rates on old af seeds.

Some people score the seam that pops open to make it easier for the little buggers to pop out. Have also seen a specially designed seed cracker for that purpose.

Some people just soak them in water and watch carefully for when they pop. Ha e to be careful though because they can drown if left too long.

Freezing them is best for really long term storage. Also you only need 1 male and 1 female plant to germinate to make thousands of seeds. Should probably be first order after SHTF, put a system in place to generate more seeds asap.

I grew out beans last year that were improperly stored in an old camper since like 2001. No noticable difference in germ rate from year old seeds.

**edit** added pic of said old seeds

These were popped from a bag of seeds harvested in 2001 or 2002 so they're 17 to 18 years old if I'm not mistaken. They were in a torn sandwich bag in a cabinet in an old camper that was not heated or cooled. In fact the windows are usually open no matter the weather. They were dark and dry but not temp controlled or even in a sealed bag.

Out of all these, there were maybe 10 small green seeds that didn't germ and probably wouldn't have sprouted even fresh from being too immature. I normally don't even try to germ green seeds but these were 3rd string backups and I just dumped some on a wet towel and called it good. There were probably another 8 that looked like good beans but never popped. I didn't soak or score or crack any if these seeds.

Yo, respective dawgs. I hear ya on the permaculture thing, but there's the thing, it takes for fucking ever to get a food forest up and running into production, an even then, the output per acre is meh compared to annuals. A decades old fruit & nut orchard can do pretty damn well, but it's just as inconsistent and unreliable as farming annuals, depending on the season. The main difference being, at a certain point most of the work is done when farming perennials. But even then, there is still some maintenance involved even with permaculture.

I did a small scale experiment with heavy lawn-clipping mulch and planting a shitload of different seeds to see what would grow straight out of an un-cultivated patch of grass last year, and I ot interesting results out of Mammoth Sunflowers, Sugar pumpkins, Seminole Pumpkins, and grain Sorghum.

This year, I'm trying out a system using these and a few new candidates sown directly into un-mulched lawn. I'm hoping they will take over and suppress the grass, yeild decently, and provide enough residue to  finish off the native grass and set the scene for something more productive the second year, all without the use of fossil fuel, or animal power.

Yeah, for sure it takes a while to get it set up, although that's another argument for starting it now

That's a cool experiment though, you should let us know how it goes. I'm interested in growing anything that can compete with grass and still yield some usable food.

I'd highly recommend choosing medicinal trees over plants, due to the fact they can usually  be harvested from and located all year regardless of flood, snow drought ect.

Choose plants based on recipes so you can fill all the ingredients from your own stock.
No point growing ginger if you don't allso have tumeric, ephedra, lemon and either 1. A local source of honey or 2. A good stock pile of it.
It's cheap now and honey on your pantry shelf will be safe to eat well and truly beyond your grand kids life times.

Alcohol production or stockpile should also be considered.
And likewise a blue mold room where overripe or soft oranges and bread can be placed to produce penicillium mold. This will produce nausea upon consumption  unlike pure penicillin but certainly beats death from a simple infection or disease.

So theres your first lot of ingredients for general illnesses/common nastys.
(Cold, flu, fever, nausea, bacterial illness)
Ginger, tumeric(both stimulate certain antibiotic process)
Ephedra, keeps you physically capable and able to continue working through illness.
Lemons, vitamin c is the immunity vitamin. Honey for flavor and a host of medicinal uses.

This formula can remain in this basic form or... in event of (Bacterial not viral infection) the skin of an entire blue orange can be added for antibiotic effect.

In the event of a viral infection Turkey tail mushrooms are added instead.

You now allso have your first important piece of medicine to research, determining a viral vs a bacterial infection or illness.

If there are any illnesses present in your area that could be difficult to determine a diagnosis for due to commonality of symptoms to less serious diseases then it would be wise to add remedies for those to your medicinal garden. Malaria,  yellow fever ect can seem like less serious illnesses initially.
Cinchona tree should be added to the list if in an area that historically  had malaria.  Depending on your proposed shtf cause and scale alot of control methods for mosquitoes and sewage ect may no longer be active.
I'd expect a large jump in mosquito borne disease, cholera due to poor water treatment/contamination and sexually transmitted infections due to inability to test for them.

Minor skin rashes/infections and drawing compounds for splinters due to an increase In manual labor and wear and tear on your hands.
Like wise coffea/tea to perk you up.

Black walnut is probably the single most useful medicinal plant,if you can only grow one...
Antiparastitc, antiviral, antibiotic anti cancer.... ect ect.

Of course plenty of opium and dont forget dental hygiene....

I'd imagine a snuff could be prepared from datura seeds as this would be a fast absorption route, even though an organophosphate poison may render you unconscious and imobal, provided your nose was plugged with atropine in the form of seed powder during the initial symptom onset(preferablely prior to exposure) I'd imagine a better chance could be stood.
