For all the Cultivating Gurus
    #2646744 - 05/06/04 05:20 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

I tried doing a concrete search on the question if crushed coral reef could be used for a pH buffer and got nowhere. So I'm asking for a concrete answer if it can be used as a better alternative to oyster shell. Here is a link: http://store.yahoo.com/wetpetsusa/ca10ficrco.html

"It?s the only crushed coral with aragonite, which provides up to 25 times the buffering power of other crushed corals, dolomite, or oyster shell. Eliminate chronic Ph problems and provide maximum surface area for water purifying bacteria. CaribSea's Florida Crushed Coral with aragonite allows an increase in bioload by up to 50% and it never needs replacement! No rinsing required.

This product is also able to be utilized in calcium reactors and plenum systems to deliver not only calcium, but also carbonate buffer, and essential trace elements such as Strontium (up to 10,000 ppm!)."

well coral is simply sodium bicarbonate... I've never personally tried it, but I imagine it would indeed work. I dont know if it would actually be "better" than oyster shells or hydrated lime, but I really don't see how different it would be.

on a side note, that's actually a big problem with acid rain and global warming... the acidifying of the oceans causes the dissappearance of the coral reefs...

It's calcium carbonate I believe. Sodium bicarbonate is baking soda.

Preserve the coral reefs and buy lime. The coral reefs are dying -- please try to have some respect and preserve them.
