Gymnopilus....
    #26466933 - 02/03/20 02:36 PM (4 years, 14 days ago)

Habitat:
Growing on a tree stump, in a rather dry day on a region of pine trees a few hundred meters from a camping area. Outskirts of Lisbon, Portugal.

Gills:
Slightly decurrent, kind of rusty brown

Stem:
Thick and bulkier on the bottom, slightly to the side.

Cap:
One of the specimens was quite massive, with cap over 20cm in diameter. Orange with those patterns shown in the pictures.

Spore print color:
I believe rusty brown as seen by the upper surface of the ring, but unfortunately I haven't saved the spore print

Other information:
I believe this to be G. junonius, as this has been the only suitable candidate I have found recorded in this area. I am, however, unfamiliar with similar species and would appreciate some confirmation. If it is in fact junonius, any information on it is welcomed!

sure looks like G. junonias but Gymns are incredibly variable and difficult to ID by pics alone

Thanks for the feedback guys!
Mr. Muncher just read your hard trip thread a little while ago and it inspired me to start this one ahah to become better acquainted with the Gymns

ye be careful man those things are so weird. that shit was nuts. if you havnt tried them before i would recommend making the tea because if you are severly allergic i have a feeling something leftover in the actual tissues of the mushroom might send you to the ER. im suprised there havnt been more threads like that on here maybe its fairly uncommon. but ive never seen any bruise like those before. there are gymns everywhere i would bet most of the taxons right now are "wrong". we seem to know very little about them yet

i know nothing
fer sure wait for TI

that was the second time i tried them. the first time i made tea with a handful of mature caps some probably from the same log (mixed bag from multiple patches/logs) as well as munching a few dried and i got an intense stomach ache and spent the night in the fetul position clenching my gut. im not sure if i got anything from them that night but i wasnt trying to stay up long enough to see. it hurt pretty bad

im pretty nervous to try any other shrooms again after this last experience. the symptoms i experienced mirrored the normal body sensations i get while tripping and i really wonder if i am gonna react like that to other active genera now. really hope im only allergic to the gyms or sumthin in em cuz i really love my shrooms

Looks like jims. I doubt they're active, though. Do they bruise green?
European G.junionus is said to be inactive. I never saw any bruising in any of the specimens I've found in Europe so I've always left them in the woods.
Laughing jims do contain other alkaloids than psilocybin/psilocine and it's possible the European variants also has this. They taste pretty awful, so tea would probably be the way to go. Let us know if you try!

Unfortunately these specimens are no longer in my possession... but there was no conspicuous bruising.

From this article (shared in MadMuncher's thread): https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/biomedres/33/2/33_2_111/_article

I read that it is precisely American and European junonius (a.k.a G. spectabilis, Laughing Gym...) which have been reported to contain psilocybin, although from what is implied in the text its use as a hallucinogenic pertains mostly to Japan (but no psilocybin has been reported there). The article suggests Gymnopilin to play some neurotoxic role. But there appear to be contradictory reports regarding this, so who knows...
In any case I don't think I would try it with such scarcity of intelligence ahah
