Pinning on side of jar? Bod's fruiting tek
    #26466568 - 02/03/20 10:03 AM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Hey all,
As title mentions, I'm fruiting a couple cakes in jar with baggies on top per bod's easy af Tek. I'm mostly just getting pins on the sides of the jars and wondering if I should just take them out to fruit in a larger Jar for easier harvest?

For now I've moved them to a 1 gallon glass jar with plastic bag on top. I may add some perlite on bottom here shortly

They'll be easy to harvest in those half pints as the sub will pull away from the sides
and it will slip out pretty easily.
They're side pinning because the fruits aren't liking your top surface conditions.
That verm looks pretty wet. Maybe don't mist as much.
Or just put them in a different container as you mentioned and leave them alone.

Gotcha, thanks.
Do you think perlite at the bottom of a 1 gallon glass jar is necessary?

Honestly, I've never used a SGFC or any fc that uses perlite, so my answer isn't backed up with experience,
but I'd skip the perlite and container, and try to finish out this grow before you experiment.

I'd just keep the bag on and stop misting the Verm as often unless it's drying out.
It's prob over saturated so it's looking to fruit elsewhere with better conditions (side).

I’d tighten the baggie.
I’m sure BOD’s tek is more effective when done correctly, but I’ve had success top-fruiting quarts of grain by casing, putting cling wrap over the jar mouth and making 5-10 small holes in the plastic. Once the mush caps reach the plastic, I remove it completely - the fruit create a good enough micro-climate.

Alright, I trust your more experienced judgement. Put them back in the jars with ziplock and won't mist for a day or so

I may be wrong about this but I'm almost positive mushrooms do not release humidity. The microclimate you are referring to is made by the substrate not the fruits.

Anyway.. ziplocks work great for top fruiting!

TBH I meant the caps kinda close off the jar enough to keep the humidity up.
But yeah you’re right, the humidity doesn’t come from the fruit.

They might not release water vapor in the same way plants do VIA transpiration but anything that contains 90% water is going to release water through evaporation...

I've noticed that my tubs dont even start to sweat until I get my pins and the bigger they get the more humidity is on the walls. Probably because the draw water from the sub increasing surface area aiding in evaporation.

I'm assuming this to be true anyway...dodnt go reading up on it or anything...

the substrate is what evaps off the moisture to create humidity and the mushrooms hold the humidity close to the surface by forming a microclimate, even more so when mature with caps open.  thats why we shoot for canopies so the microclimate is right for the next flush coming in..  it just doesnt always happen.

the mushroom itself does not expel moisture, they do not sweat, the take in O2 and give off CO2 while absorbing moisture through their cells and growing via cellular expansion rather than division.  :smirk:

Hmm ok well that sounds like it makes sense.. I'll have to look into it to make sure just because you would think anything that holds moisture will also loose moisture, unless its sealed up in something that isn't permeable...

I mean if you harvest all your shrooms and put them in an empty tub dont you think they would start to shrivel up? If so then they are releasing water. Unless it only happens after they are harvested for some reason... I'm not sure...

Hmm.. idk man, you don’t think fruits release moisture into the air?  I feel like a tub of almost mature fruits has waaay higher rh than a tub of, say, pins. I could also be wrong, but I also feel almost positive

I just feel like evaporation is part of the cycle of pulling water from the sub as it expands the fruits.. maybe why heavily misting fruits can stunt them because it clogs up the cycle.. but that’s just me thinking about shut and I have absolutely no scientific basis in that thought.. so nobody quote me ffs

Ya thats what I'm saying... my tubs barely have condensation until they fruit and there is progressively more moisture on the walls relative to their size.  When they're mature those walls are drippin...

That’s pretty weird. My tubs have condensation all over the walls and lid literally 2 days after spawning.🤷🏻‍♂️

Putting fresh fruits in a ziplock doesnt coat the bag in 'moisture'.

Maybe I shouldn't of brought it up sorry op:lol:

No prob, interesting discussion. I'm too new to have much of an opinion on it. My main concerns with fruiting in sides were harvesting- at right time and ease of access. Maybe getting an easy spore print too from a cap not squished.

FWIW, I actually forgot the dry verm later originally and just covered with gauze after I remembered. It was from syringe several months old too
