Really just practice. Pour a sleeve of them, see how it is for your situation (sab or flow). See if any containment from your pour. Do blank transfers to see how it all feels. It's a motor memory thing. You have to get the right temp or condensation will obstruct your view.

When growing out mycelium in petri dishes, should they be kept in the dark or is  indoor light ok? or does it not really matter?

You want to pour the dishes around 40-50 degrees c to prevent condensation. Make sure you appropriately sterilize your scalpel every transfer. Patiences is key for this hobby. You’ll develop a feel for everything after the first couple times. Light is fine, no need to be kept in the dark.

Pouring at that temp guarantees condensation.  You want to pour as cool as you can before it starts to gel up.  Bod recommends 117 degrees F as optimal in his tek.

Or pour at any temp in open air, then sterilize them after.
This is known as "no-pour".

That is another valid approach.  But most people aren't using Petri dishes for that as the plastic wouldn't handle the PC.

Hello, brand new noob, first comment/post - my agar is pulling away from the sides of the Petri dish, they are in unzipped ziploc bags. Does this mean they are drying out? Should I zip the bags shut?
They are currently living in a shoebox, heated with a lower tub full of water with an aquarium heater.

1.) make videos of yourself pouring petris and doing sterile work(inoculations ect..)

2.) post them on shroomery.

3.) listen to advice given for free to help you become a master shroom grower.

4.)

Definitely depends on the dishes chosen. These are all valid noob considerations.

They should have been zipped shut when you put them in the bag, yes.
Lose the heater.
