Sterelise or pasteurise saw dust for Kings?
    #26466147 - 02/03/20 12:25 AM (3 years, 11 months ago)

I have my first 3 grain jars almost ready for use. I have some sawdust that I will inoculate with grain, problem is I have no flow hood or SAB at the moment. I know it’s not ideal but I’ve come this far without one so I’d like to see how well I can manage with bare minimum. Anyways should I pasteurise or pressure cook the saw dust if I am going to open spawn the substrate? I’ve heard a bit about beneficial bacteria that is able to withstand pasteurisation and helps keep contams at bay but can be killed with pressure cooking. I don’t have grow bags and can’t buy them online where I love either so I’ll have to load a bucket or something of the sort with layers of substrate and grain spawn. What would be my best way forward?

if it's actual sawdust not HWFP, pasteurize it properly and don't supplement, you should be good to go

Awesome 👍🏻.. They’re wood shavings that I got from a guy who cuts up trees for fire wood, I’m not sure what HWFP is? What would be the proper technique for pasteurisation when open air spawning?  Boil/steam it for an hour, cool down then followed by lots of grain spawn?

HWFP = hardwood fuel pellets.  It's what I and a lot of others use in place of sawdust because it's cheap and easier to work with.  If you live in a place where they're available I would highly suggest.

I'm not well versed in proper pasteurization because I don't need to do it with HWFP, but there should be LOADS of threads on here about it, or the guys in mush cult can help.  But no, proper pasteurization isn't just boiling or steaming for an hour, you need to get your substrate within a certain range, and keep it there for about an hour.

Although kings are a VERY aggressive species and pretty forgiving, so it'll probably work fine even if you fuck up the pasteurization.

If you're looking to grow Kings easy, check out my current experiment. Going super well.

No pasteurizing or sterilizing of anything aside from the spawn. Also the sub is a one ingredient recipe. Easy peasy.

Thanks, looks interesting! Is that coir with supplementation?

So here’s a question, say if you’ve sterilised supplemented sawdust, how high to the risk of contams would that be to inoc in open air conditions?

I’ve all the bits for my flowhood part from the actual wood to build it with which is on route by next week hopefully. I’ve about 4 quarts of colonised 2 different oyster variety’s and a few more just finishing up. I’ve sterilised a 50/50 sawdust/soy hulls in jars in my pc...I want the substrate out the jar and into another container but no flow hood to do it in as of yet.  Anyone ever done that before?

I'll let someone who's used soy hulls confirm, but I'd say for oysters you'll probably be fine.  Especially if it's kings.

I've supplemented with BRAN before and spawned open air with kings, they're aggressive enough it worked fine.

Agreed. Don't bother. Kings seem to outrun anything.

I’ve got enough spawn to give it a shout I suppose...these aren’t kings I’ve two white oyster and two Phoenix oyster ready now, they colonised the grain jar bang on 1 week so I’d say they’re pretty fast like...

I’ll try tomorrow and let you know how I get on

Stoked.  Have some kings on the way and just found a local source for HWFP - didnt realize you didnt need to pasteurize them.  good to know
