FLEX FUEL VS. REGULAR GAS
    #26465931 - 02/02/20 08:30 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Just got a car that runs on flex fuel. Does anyone have one as well? Is it more efficient than regular gas? It also says I shouldn't use less than 87 octane gas in the vehicle, so mid grade or better. I appreciate any input.

Flex fuel just means you can run e85 as well as regular gas. The octane number is not a rating of quality but a rating of resistance on whats known as detonation, gas igniting before the spark due to high heat. Turbo charged cars and high compression cars need a higher octane to resist pre-detonation. 87 should be fine unless the manufacturer calls for something higher.

Is it more fuel efficient? Is better to run that instead of regular gas?

Higher octane burns cleaner. I use 91 or higher in my old Harley's there's less carbon build up

E85 uses more fuel by volume ~30% more than regular fuel. I think e85 is cleaner burning but can make more power and more versatile.

I think I'll stick to the 87 or higher octane. If I see a flex fuel pump I may try it, but I'm not going out of my way, lol.

Yeah my Chevy Silverado can take E85, I've never put any in my tank and don't have any intentions to, ever.

I only run premium fuel through my truck

Octane-rating doesn't have anything to do with how "cleanly" the fuel burns. Octane doesn't mean anything in regards to the "quality" or "cleanliness" of the fuel.

Octane-rating is nothing more than how resistant the fuel is to pre-detonation/knocking.

Engines that require high octane fuel won't perform as well on low-octane fuel, but that doesn't mean the lower octane fuel is lower quality or doesn't "burn" as clean.
