Are all coco coir the same or do i need a certain one/brand for substrate
    #26464805 - 02/02/20 08:02 AM (4 years, 14 days ago)

Getting ready to make my substrate, do i need a certain brand of coco coir brick or do they all work the same? Im looking at reviews and some are saying you cant grow mushrooms with them. Anyone have a suggestion on a brand they know works well?

they're definitely not all the same.

I use the "ECO-EARTH" brand from pet smart.  You can get 3 bricks for $10.

Some brand's of coco coir actually have trichoderma added to them by the manufacturer because it helps plants grow somehow?  idk.  but it will fuck up your mushroom grow.

this is what you're looking for

The problem is not the added trichoderma as it cannot germinate on coir directly and usually killed by boiling water in your bucket tek.
The problem is the extra nutritional shit like seeds and whatever they cut it with. I once had a batch where every single one contaminated and when I mixed it water it smelled like a musty cellar

But yeah to the point - no I don't think they are the same.

People have said some bad things about eco earth over the years. Ive had the opposite issue with it. None. So I stick with it. It may hold less water now compared to others but if you hydrate to field capacity it is no issue. I always hydrate with a little less water to see where it stands then add to achieve field capacity. I do it all by eye. I have a general volume that works for a multi tub session. But I hold back 2-3 quarts of my final sub water and bring up to fc.

I've been using ECO EARTH since day 1.

4.5 quarts of boiling water to 1 brick always gives perfect moisture content. Hydrate and spawn when its cool enough to handle.

Yea I've always used eco earth. It fuckin blows but what can you do. Most any coir you find will work. Ive used eco earth random bricks off ebay and amazon and the organics brand ones walmart sometimes carries.
They have all worked about the same. Some have more sand than others. Some have high salt content. Some will have seeds that can cause problems. You wont know until you try it out but the most common one is eco earth that you can get from pet stores. We've used it for years so it works, but at the same time you can find alot better quality.

I know we have mentioned this before regarding grain, but has anyone tried fermenting coir and then pasteurizing it?

Keep it simple stupid. Thats what works best in my opinion!

I grow oysters, chicken of the woods and lions mane.

Simple no additives organic coco coir and gypsum work great.
