Do agar jars really need so much fresh air?

I am just starting out with agar. So far, I have cooked the patato-honey-agar mix, put it in jars (about 1cm per jar, while the jars are about 10-12 cm high). I PC'ed them and am currently waiting for them to cool.
Since there is plenty of air in the jars already, do I really need a hole in the cap and a filter on top? Why not simply seal them shut with the cap without a hole? How much air do they really need to develop some mycelium?
Mycelium growing needs high co2 anyway, so why bother with holes?

Not necessarily high co2, thats kind of an older thing. Mushrooms are aerobic organisms they need air to survive, that being said its not like they need a sh*t ton to grow. Usually whatevers in the container works fine. i use mini ziploc screw tops and keep em screwed down till I transfer or drop it. Maybe if i feel like it needs more air ill screw the lid back a bit for awhile, aint had no contam pop up from doin that yet and i just sit it on my dresser in front of a window

Many people use petri dishes and those have a lot less air than your jars.
You don't need those holes for oxygen exchange but to be able to open the jars after PCing. During PCing a vacuum is going to build up in your jars and you can have a really hard time opening them; especially with your hands in a SAB. Also, if you open them finally, (probably contaminated) air from the outside is going to get sucked into your jars. You don't want that.
There is one really golden rule for all beginners: Stick to the TEK! And I don't mean, stick to it mostly and change a bit here and don't do that annoying thing there. Stick to it 100%. People know why they tell you to do stuff. In most TEKs they even explain why. If not, just read some more TEKs, maybe someone else explains it, or just use the search box.

He is right, i didnt think to add that. Was just speaking from my pp5 containers that i use. If youve ever tried to open a fresh homemade jam jar or really any with a metal lid and band compare it to that, a vacuum is created when they are sealed hot then cooled if there is no hole in the lid. Makes it a royal pain in the ass to open, plus when you do air will be sucked into it and possibly/probably contaminate from the get go.
If you havent found this yet i recommend readin alot of it, i still do every now n then. Days of reading and tons of great info, even videos for stuff some people find confusing!

Hm I haven't thought about the air being sucked in. That's a good point. I could try opening them wrapped in a paper towel drenched in bleach. I will be using a still air box in any case. Thanks for the link!

I would wrap the shit out of my petris and I'm telling you there was no air exchange going on and they work fine. The air that is in the container will be enough for that plate to grow out..
But ya if u dont make a hole for some nopours its gonna create a vacuum in your container, given it is air tight...
