Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill died. * 1
    #26464105 - 02/01/20 06:05 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill died today at the age of 64. Like the Velvet Underground their influence was far greater than their initial popularity. Their first album 1979's Entertainment his since been named one of the greatest debut albums, one of the greatest punk albums and one of the greatest alternative albums. Gill and his bandmates developed a distinctive postpunk sound while first generation punk was still in it's heyday. On their 3rd or 4th album they added a female singer and had a hit with I Love a Man in a Uniform, which was banned in Britain during the Falklands War.

Their lyrics were based on Marxist theory yet most of their songs were incredibly danceable. I still remember the Rolling Stone Mag review of Entertainment which they titled Dancing to the Dialectic. IMO their best songs were about society's (they would say bourgeois society's) and popular cultures distortions of our ideas about love and sex. I highly recommend the songs, Damaged Goods, Natural is Not in It, Anthrax and I Found that Essence Rare. They carried the torch that John Lennon laid out in Working Class Hero: Keep em doped with religion and sex and TV, And you think they're so clever and classless and free, but your still fucking peasants as far as I can see.

More recently Flea said this about Gill's guitar playing. The Edge said he got his riffs from old bluesmen. Bullshit, he stole them from Andy Gill.

The worst thing about corruption is that it works so well,
