Agar for a noob like me? 1

Hey guys, so I want to start learning to do agar, but there are so many teks and different ways, I'm still trying to understand the basics of pour vs no pour, etc. I am a novice and beginner just getting into bulk, and everyone was at the same point as me at sometime during their own learning. Keeping that in mind, I am looking for the most simple, basic, idiot proof agar tek I can do to start. Something that is very simple for a beginner like me that I would really have to try and fuck it up to mess it up. What do you guys recommend I do?
Thank you to everyone on this forum that has been giving me their advice, input, and dealing with my constant questions and different threads on every single little thing. It is very much appreciated.

Hi there...I'm an idiot and this agar tek worked great for me! I was able to have real nice success with it right out of the gate. I use powder MEA and don't add anything but other than that, I do it just like this https://www.shroomery.org/forums/remlinker.php?Cat=&Entry=195611&F_Board=2&Thread=19208976&Main=19208976
The dish he uses is what makes it so easy. The only tricky part is learning to use a SAB

I also started with a version of pasty plates. They are great because you can get everything locally. But eventually I got tired of low visibility and switched to glass petris, the process is the same, except easier. No lid modifications. Now I see all.

True true, the visibility of the Gladware is a bit of a pain and has had me considering upgrading

I got started with a box of sterile petris from a known supplier of things, and this link

I am a self described noob and it served me well.

Oh yeah, that's a good write up there. Bod's word is gospel as far as I'm concerned. Will definitely be using that later on!

For no pours I like the little regular mourh half pint anchor brand jars that are sold at walmart about 7 bucks for a dozen. I use unmodified plastic lids with them. I leave the lids loose while pressure cooking then after they are cool I will tighten them down. For agar I just mix 8 grams agar powder and 8 gram malt extract into 500ml water in a pyrex measuring cup and microwave until boiling. Stir until dissolved then pour maybe a 1/4" in the bottom of each jar. I let them cool before adding the lids loosely. Then slap them im a pc vent pc for 10 minutes bring pressure up super slow. Pc for 25 minutes and bring pressure down super slow. Condensation free glass no pours. Simple as fuck and never have to worry about a warped container.

I'm just starting too so figured i'd try both. These seem to be the best 'non -pour' containers, good vision, size, no taping needed, reusable https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26374264
While i wait for those i bought a 20pk sterile petri dishes, Pouring them in a SAB wasn't too bad.

What is the difference and significance between pour and no pour? Which one should a beginner be using? Do I need a flow hood and all that for this? I thought there was a simple method for a beginner like myself.

This is the Tek to follow. Welcome aboard, Bodhisatta knows his shit. I have been on the cultivation train for a decade and learned something new for agar today after reading his tek

Can't I just buy pre made MEA powder and mix it with water?

I started with a little bad of pre made lme agar and a couple sleeves until I was sure I wanted to do it.
Itβs a lot nicer to be able to change the ratios though.

What advantage do you gain by changing the ratios?
I'm a total noob at it, and after watching RR's videos on how he does it, he just goes with an already made bag and mixes with water. He says it's so much more simple, and to me it does also seem a lot more simple, I'm wondering why nobody recommended such a simple thing for me to start with in the first place...
With the "easy" teks on here it's already kind of over whelming with all the different stuff you still have to buy.

Making your own takes the same amount of time as pre mixed.
If you use less nutrients the cultures grow faster and are more likely to go rhizo, more makes it slower which is good for storing longer term stuff.
Using less agar makes the plates softer which can help with spores, and you can do stuff like make super soft plates that will liquify in a grain jar when you shake it, coating everything and colonizing much quicker.

That's what I do, it works just fine. A custom nute ratio might help slightly but I wouldn't think it'd make a big difference

There is nothing wrong with premixed MEA go with that if you want. Especially for a beginner you can mix your own down the road if tou decide to. I think peemix may be a little more expensive im not sure but if so not enough to avoid buying it.

I have 9 plates going with different methods of inoculation. I am logging the results. I will let you know how they turn out and monitor how yours turned out. I just made my first dishes a few weeks ago.

Ive never uses a premix I mix my own and buy the agar locally. Maybe try shroomery sponsors or look on amazon. I think most are 50/50 mixes so any premixed MEA should work.
