Gymnopilus?
    #26460767 - 01/30/20 06:32 PM (4 years, 17 days ago)

So, i found this clump of what i was hoping were gymnopilus spectablis last summer but have been unable to get a consistent identification. I’ve tried a few different forums on Facebook and have it pretty well narrowed down to gyms or pholiota, though there were a few other suggestions. Im wondering if they were too old and dry to properly ID. Any help is appreciated!

Habitat: rotting stump (possibly red pine) in Michigan’s upper peninsula.

Gills: attached/ adnate?

Stem: Fibrous, tan/off white

Cap: Gold/ tan. Some caps were at least 5” across. Darker and raised in middle. Smooth. Split at edges (hot and dry weather at the time)

Spore print color: Mushrooms were quite mature and no spore print was possible. Half the mushrooms and the surrounding vegetation were covered in what looked like rusty brown to brownish orange spores, though the cap color could effect the way the spores appear.

Bruising: nothing noticeable

Other information: no bitter taste, no blue or green bruising.

I’d say Hypholoma lateritium. The tell for me is gill appearance.
But wait for a TI to chime in.

Looks like Gymnopilus to me.  Something like what's described for G. magnus, if it's even a valid name. More modern work needs to be done in order to sort these out visually.  Based on some recent Genbank vouchers there appears to be a Gymnopilus paper in the works(Gymnopilus andrusvoitkii and the Gymnopilus junonius complex). From what I can make out, there is now a firm concept of G. Luteus and G. subspectabilis may be a valid taxon.

They are suspicious, but I'd guess a hypholoma of a sort....

I agree it nearly matches Gymnopilus to a T.
But I think the lamellae is too dark even after nearly sterile and the fact that OP said it’s not bitter.
Maybe a non-taster. Interesting article; https://namyco.org/docs/Hallock.pdf

But also, I admit I might be speaking too soon on Hypholoma as the cap seems more dry and textures than you’d expect from Hypholoma.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if bitter taste was completely universal to all gym species or not, but even non-active gyms I've found still smelled and tasted like gyms...

I have no experience with gyms so i cant compare. But I did read in other posts on here that not all active gyms are bitter and not all active gyms bruise blue. Thats just other people’s observations though, not my own.

I may be acquiring a microscope soon to check out the spores. I’ve never used a microscope for identification before and I’m not sure how powerful they need to be or if the one I found will be suitable, but I’ll report back when I have it in hand!
