How Far South in California Can One Find Woodlovers in Dune Grass

The title basically says it all. After finding non actives on the beach in Marin County last week, I became curious about the dune grass in the Bay Area. I know people find Cyanescens in Humboldt out in the dunes and there is very similar habitat found further South where Cyans and Allenii are found close by in woodchips, etc. Anyone ever find actives in the dunes South of Humboldt County?

I can't speak from experience, but I'd be surprised if they weren't there. I'd guess people just focus on urban chips because they're abundant, easy to hunt, and produce large flushes.

I'll try to put in a good days worth of searching the habitat before the season is 100% over

I would look, you never know what you will find unless you get out and see what happens.

I haven't heard of Psilocybe being found in dune grass south of Arcata. Surely they must go south of there a little bit, but not too much. You definitely won't find them there in Marin or Sonoma counties, and I doubt Mendocino county too.

It's a shame that cubensis won't grow in that area with all the dairy farms, well there were lots of dairy cows around the Petaluma area when I was there.

We have cows everywhere out there, and so many of my friends are still convinced that's where to find psilocybe. Hah.

What are your thoughts on introducing spores to these areas local to me? Places where I know the driftwood washes up to the dune grass during storms. Would I be wasting my time?

Speaking generally, I doubt just introducing spores to a habitat will help much. There are probably several reasons why a species won't grow in certain areas, although it's hard for us to really understand. If you want to try introducing a species to a locality or area where it isn't growing naturally, you would probably have to make a spawn first which you transfer to wood chips and make a bed. If they like it there, they might spread, although competition is hard and they might just fruit for one season and be gone.
Try checking for a woodlover tek in the Cultivation forum.

Right. I've got spawn going at home, some on chips and some on cardboard, and recently got some agar to experiment. I started an outdoor bed in the backyard last year but waited too late to get it in the ground so didn't see any fruit this season, though the mycelium looks healthy. Since the dune environment seemed so different I thought spraying spores everytime I go check the surf, which is almost every day, might be an option, but I could see burying some spawn out there I suppose.

Damn, so is the climate just not quite right as you move south closer to the bay area? Still fun to move some mycelium around and see what happens.
