Last weekend I had probably the closest brush with death that I've ever had. 6

Last weekend a friend of mine hosted a get together. Just the fellas. Grilling and drinking. Some poker.
There was like 10 of us. The steaks just came off the grill and everybody was eating and talking. Some in the dining area, some on the kitchen bar.
We were all throwing back the drinks at a good pace at that point (with many more to come).
So I cut off this pretty decent sized hunk of meat off the steak. I mean it was a bite, but a large one.
Apparently I didn't chew it good enough and swallowed anyway.
It stopped in the middle of my throat. I swallowed. Nothing. I swallowed again. Nothing. I kept swallowing. And kept swallowing.
Nothing.
At this point 30 seconds or so have passed and I realized that this piece of steak is not moving. And that I can't breathe. So all these thoughts start flooding my brain.
Do I motion to my friends that I'm choking? Is this really happening? Do I rush to the bathroom and try to figure it out myself (the absolute worst thing you can do in that situation)?
So what did I do? I chose the worst strategy of course, and quietly walked to the bathroom as if nothing was wrong (by the way at this point nobody there had a clue).
So I'm in the bathroom, and another...idk, 20 seconds have went by. At this point I had enough time to even wonder to myself if this was the way that I'm going to die. From a piece of steak. And how my friends would find me in there a few minutes later dead and how that would really be a mood killer for their poker night.
Now it gets real hazy here. It happened so fast that I can't even remember exactly how the piece of steak came up. I remember (I think) reaching my fingers into my mouth -- to maybe induce a gag. But I don't think I got that far.
The piece of steak, after probably...I'm thinking 75 to 90 seconds, was now in my hand. I can't remember if I physically reached into my throat and pulled it out, or if I just tried to push it forward instead of trying to swallow and it coming up that way. But as quickly as it happened all of a sudden it was over.
I just tossed the piece into the trash can, washed my hands and face, and then walked out like nothing happened.
So after that happened, and I was thinking more about it, I did a google search on a few people's choking experiences and a whole article came up about something referred to as "steakhouse syndrome". It's where someone who is choking at a steakhouse (which happens quite often) begins to choke but doesn't want to cause a commotion in front of the entire restaurant, so they quietly duck off to the restroom to try and get it out. But many don't. According to the article most restaurant choking deaths occur in the restroom.
So yeah, I did the absolute worst thing you could do. I got lucky. During my brief google investigating I saw that choking is ranked 3rd among all accidental death killers. So chew good, people. And avoid the big bites. Bread is also way up there as a choking culprit. And if you ever find yourself in my predicament, do NOT run off the bathroom. Let people know immediately because otherwise you could end up being found without a pulse on the bathroom floor.
TLDR: Almost choked on a piece of steak

I would have never thought you would have choked on some meat.

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Psalm 12:6 The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. I had this once, food down the lung pipe, breath not moving, and no one was around to save me! I got it out by doing a death metal gurgle scream like cannibal corpse style hunched over. It worked! unfortunately.

Honestly man, you died that night.
This is just the version of you that lived. Many worlds theory.
Just playing (maybe). Glad you're okay, sounds terrifying. As you said choking is more common than most people think.

Glad you're okay. That's scary man. I probably would have (stupidly) done the exact same thing.
It's funny that embarrassment in the moment is often literally judged to be worse than death.

I know the feeling it happened to me twice. Both were from candy. Last time I was hanging out with friends in my living room eating skittles when I guess the juices like glued my throat closed. I couldn't get any air whatsoever. I sat up and motioned that I needed a drink. My friends all just froze and were freaked out. It was kind of disappointing none of my friends jumped to action and just got me something to drink or gave me the heimlick maneuver.
The other time I was on the bus home from school and a tootsie roll glued my throat closed. I don't know why this happens to me. It's scary though.

Damn dude, that's insane! Glad you're alright.
Yeah, what you did could have taken your life. Your politeness almost went too far. But heres the cool thing about humans, theres an automatic system in your body that will do things to keep you alive. Its automatic and its pretty damn cool.
Choking is fuckin' scary. Its happened to me a couple times. Definitely something to
Oh, learn the self-Hymlack maneuver, it might save your own life or someone elses:
Quote:
Heimlich Maneuver On yourself
If you’re alone and choking, follow these steps:
Make a fist and place it just above your navel, thumb side in. Grab the fist with your other hand and push it inward and upward at the same time. Perform five of these abdominal thrusts. Repeat until the object is expelled and you can breathe or cough on your own.
You can also thrust your upper abdomen against a hard edge like the corner of a table or counter, or back of a chair.

I swear, as insane as that sounds, that was pretty much the reality of the situation last Sat. night.
I didn't want to be the drunk dumb ass who couldn't properly eat a steak the night we were all hanging out and having a good time so I'd rather take my chances with life & death in the bathroom on my own. Unbelievable, really. Looking back on it I was operating on a level of stupid that reached epic proportions.
If that piece was a little bit bigger, or stuck in a slightly different place, then maybe I don't get lucky and I die right there in that bathroom. All because I didn't want to let people know I was choking and needed help.

In the end how did you get them dislodged?

Lol, the description of her meal made me -100% uncompassionate
“Ms Evans told Newport Coroners' Court she watched her mother eating the £13.79 meal - consisting of a 4oz rump steak, half a gammon steak, two fried eggs, half a chicken breast, two pork sausages, chips, onion rings, half a grilled tomato and garden peas - when she began to choke violently and bang on her chest”

I do feel bad. I just didn’t expect all those commas to keep going describing the contents of her meal.
That’s a straight price tho for all that.

I think I swallowed a few times and it opened up a little bit. I was still trying to inhale but only a tiny bit of air was getting through. It probably sounded like that girl from the grudge. Then my throat finally opened up and I could breath. It only lasted probably 20 seconds. I couldn't imagine 90 seconds and the adrenaline you probably had at that moment.

That fucking panic is all too real. Something similar happened when I was alone, I was eating smoked kippers. I chewed them fine but the texture was just so dry that they balled up and got lodged in my esophagus too far down to grab. I tried drinking water but the water weirdly came back up, like it wouldn't go down. Panic set in but I remembered to drop myself on the back of a chair to help simulate the heimlich, and also made myself puke. The combo helped it dislodge but holy shit man that feeling of helplessness is insane.
Glad you're ok, man!
