Beautiful golden under redwoods
    #26459103 - 01/29/20 08:23 PM (4 years, 18 days ago)

Habitat: In duff under coastal redwoods, Santa Cruz Mnts, CA

Popular trail, esp for kids... thus I did not yank a specimen for gill examination or spore print.  Only found four in a rough "line."  Perhaps lead me in a good direction for ID?

Some kind of Hygrocybe I think.

The parrot waxcap. Gliophorus psittacina. 98% sure. I’ll be damned if it’s not. Haha.
Breeg is right on though; formerly Hygrocybe psittacina.

Thanks to both of you.  This is one of the coolest mushrooms I've found (actually my wife found them... she's getting good!)  So cool I think I'll go back soon to see how they've progressed.  Gotta see if the gills fit the ID.  Seems right-on.

Yeah, they are pretty. Plus it's just cool to find anything in those nice redwood groves.

Definitely an undescribed species in the Hygrocybe conica group.

Taking another look at it, I agree. It’s not glutinous enough to be Gliophorus. This definitely looks waxy, not slimy. I shot from the hip and missed. My bad.

If you go back, see if there’s a way to get under and take a gill pic or at least describe color. And see if there’s any distinct smell. I’d be curious to see how the color changes.

The only monograph on Hygrophorus I could find was published in 1963. Lots of changes since then. Nothing in there seemed to perfectly match the macro descriptions. Take good pictures and it may be even worth picking for study.

Definitely worth picking for study, could even be a holotype collection if it's collected well, good field notes are taken and there's several in various stages of maturity.

Pics 1 - 3 show my original mushroom upon my return.

Then I found a yellow-orange variant?? (In an open, sunny location about 100 feet away) Pics 4 and 5.

Then a drab variant? Pic 6.

Pic 7 shows difference of original mushroom and today's yellow-orange guy after handling.

Note pic below.  How about darker mushroom that stains black after handling is Hygrocybe singeri, while yellow guy is an aging Hygrocybe virescens.  I'm just a page-flipper!

The blackening ones look like something in the  H. conica group, as Alan pointed out.
Whether or not it's an undescribed species I couldn't tell.

The non-blackening one looks like H. acutoconica.

All,
Just curious if anyone knows; would a traditional wax cap be considered “viscid” in the more familiar sense? Or is there a more specialized term? The waxiness is really pretty unique in this sense. It’s more like the feel of a soft sticky dental type wax, or like paraffin right at its softest point before melting.

It’s often a key feature, but it seems like Hygrophoraceae covers the full spectrum from slimy to rubbery. When it comes up in a key it’s almost like “well, it could be somewhat viscid” or “viscid as compared to what?”

What’s the general interpretation when it comes to wax caps?

Grosbeak,
Any distinct distinct odor?

^ Good questions... these are certainly the slimiest mushrooms I've handled, like banana slugs (we all know that of course, right?). No distinct odor.  Spore prints came in this morning as white - no surprise there.

And yeah, I think Alan and Anglerfish have about wrapped it up with H. conica and H. acutoconica.  The redwoods in this area tower over everything.  Massive A. muscaria stand under nearby pines, along with Russula (R. sanguinea, I think.) It's a myco-wonderland just 15 minutes from my house, so if you have any other questions just throw me out there again. Thanks to all!

None are H. virescens.  The name H. acutoconica is almost certainly misapplied in California.  All pictured mushrooms are undescribed.
