The gameplay is switched up a bit but it looks good. The entirety of 7 is being broken up in to 2-3 chapters too but it has really nice cutscenes and stuff. The original was one of the few games of that type I've ever really enjoyed so I hope it's as on point as it looks

Apparently the first episode is still like 80 hours of gameplay though, which I'm excited about.  I can't believe how much they included and how much they changed.

SPOILER AHEAD

I read that in a leaked version of the demo AVALANCHE actually fails the first bombing mission but Shinra decides to blow it up anyway to make AVALANCHE look bad.  I thought that was an interesting twist on the story and I'll enjoy seeing it play out.

This is one of those games that's very near and dear to me.  Every time I replay it I'm reminded of that Christmas vacation in 6th grade when I played it, maybe a year after it came out.  It was my first RPG and I couldn't put it down.  I listen to the soundtrack sometimes just to relax.

I'd really like to see a Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger remake as well.  In my opinion those are the three best RPGs, and possible best games ever made.

Apparently it ties a lot more into Chrono Trigger than I realized.  A lot of references that went completely over my head.

They teased everyone about the FF7 remake for so long, I feel almost nothing.

There it is, I guess. Cloud in a dress. In high definition. I will probably be super hyped once I sat down to play it though. :hehehe:

I played ff7 in 6th grade also. Just hearing that music brings me back and gives me these emotions of that time. It was my first rpg. I felt like I really identified with cloud for some reason. These days when I play rpg's I can barely get into the story and I just play it anyway. I'm really excited for this remake. There's nothing else I want to play between now and when it comes out. I'm kind of mad they are releasing it in 3 parts. I don't know how they can stretch disc 1 into 80 hours. I bet they are adding a lot of extra content to fill it up.

around the age of 11-13 encountered FF7
Tifa fast became one of my favourite videogame characters of all time
and is still an inspiration to me, in terms of pursuing things like Tai Chi as a form of martial arts

am also glad to see they included a teaser for the Honey Bee portion that confirms it will stay in in the practical way it appeared
there was some controversial issues around potentially including it -- like the scene where a bunch of buff gay guys try to feel up Cloud in the hot tub
and, of course, Cloud's notorious dress

but, personally, am glad to see that Tifa's character design is still busty and flaunts it in that scene

it's not the hugely disproportionate character model of the old game,
but it's still a big chunk of sweater meat for her small frame
and she doesn't let them get in the way of her fighting, but when she wants to maximize femininity she still can

apparently they traded the boob window for a dangling necklace design, but arguably actually like her new outfit as well
it fits the narrative of the scene a bit better with trying to seduce the Don

on the LGBT "controversy" of the original Honey Bee scene; and how that reflects larger traditions of portraying LGBT characters as villains rather than heroes and other issues
with a short props of recognition as to how Cloud's experiences with cross-dressing reflect and embrace the game's larger narrative themes of the journey of exploring the identity of the self

he does talk about Nintendo's tradition of censoring out LGBT characters when translating to English
but would like to note that this may be shifting in recent years, while the video is from 2014

I 100% that game when it was on PS1, beating all the Ultimate Weapons took forever; I wore out the reset button on the PS1 in doing so.
Damn Ruby Weapon.
FFVIII was so much better imo.
FVII was too unrealistic for me because Tifa never once complained about having back pain from those polygonal behemoths she was lugging around.
Yuffie gang rise up.

You made it through the worse one and quit, try it again!
I've only played FVII, FVIII, FF Tactics (all were beaten 100%), and FXIII but never beat it (stopped playing video games all together; I don't have that kind of time any longer.)

I'm not crazy about video game remakes. To me, they're the same as movie remakes. Even when they're great, they're never going to beat the original.

When a classic movie gets remade, even when the remake is amazing, in the long run everyone still remembers and watches the original, and people forget about the remake.

There's something to be said for the original versions of things, with all their flaws intact. The flaws over time add something rather than taking something away.

Also chronocross sucks. One of the worst RPGs I've ever played, and a terrible sequel to one of the greatest video games ever made.

I liked how many characters there was in Chrono Cross, and I liked that they did an alternate dimension instead of time again, and I liked the battle system with the 1,2,3 thing and percent it will hit

9 was actually really good, if you got into the series aside from 7

8 was a strange mechanical experiment where the game was designed to be able to be beaten with a level 1 character if you knew how to manage your stats
it was mechanically interesting in that manner, but the experiment was not a success

6 was the pinnacle of the FF series tho

as an aside, did enjoy the old system of being able to manage character classes in 4 and 5
but 6 did an amazing job providing characterization to the class divisions
and 7 managed to carry the formula of 6 into early 3D

could be x-X
5 and 6 were the ones I played on the original versions; 4 (or maybe 3?) was a Nintendo DS remake turned into 3d -- could be misremembering the class management for it entirely
there was also that strange numbering system where Final Fantasy 6 was Final Fantasy 3 for its initial North America release
plus 5 with the default character name Butz lol

X was one of my favorites too, been meaning to re install the remake and finally try and beat it.

Also I found X pretty hard at least once you progress far enough. Some of the bosses are pretty rough.

12 is my favorite gameplay wise though, the blend of realtime and time based combat is perfect. It almost feels like turn based combat but in real time with all the fights happening in the world rather than encounters.

I prefer the turn-based system. What is it these days? FFXIII Was the real-time based system, probably why I never finished it. I did enjoy it.

I too heard FF6 was awesome.

yeah, FF8 was actually sort of an extreme case of FF7's materia slot system with the Junction system
all major battles and bosses did not provide EXP, only the AP (?) that leveled up Guardian Forces/Summons

was not a big fan of the Junction system, personally
but did get good enough with it to totally overpower my entire party
and, in reflection, it was real cheesey to just Aura spam or keep Squall at minimum health and do Lionheart every turn
but lots of fun at the time, and a very different approach to character customization for the series

was actually a fan of the FF8 story, it did some neat things with the idea of time travel and disintigrating memory
but, more particularly, Rinoa was a hugely beloved character for me
something draws me to girls with a rough life who do their best to keep positive
but it was also 'fun' how the narrative seems to pit you against one of your own party members as the final boss
Ultemecia as Rinoa from the future gone mad with rage after the failure of Squall to be her Knight played with some Japanese ideas of the magical girl vs. the maniacal witch

but it is fair to note that ff7 has padded me for some of my "distaste" for the conceptual approach to story ff8 took
ff7 decided to have a narrative that was focused heavily on a single character (Cloud) rather than the broader sort of world-focused narrative style of ff6
where the "main character" is not required to be part of your team for much of the game, and the plot allowed for a bit more exploration of side-characters
and how everyone has personal investment in taking down Kefka,
rather than a sort of proxy-investment through relationship to the main character

so having ff8 focused so centrally on Squall and Rinoa and their "romantic" relationship
with the rest of the supporting cast being there to further the narrative of Squall's memories of his traumatic childhood being eaten by his Guardian Forces
moreso than a personal investment in stopping Rinoa/Ultemecia's impact on the timeline and the future
was not as much of a problem to me

ff8 did not age well for replay for me tho
at like 14/15 playing through a game focused primarily on the romance of two teens was a sort of directly relatable narrative for me
but in my 30s a lot of it is me getting angry at Squall for being so fucking obtuse to Rinoa's advances

ff7's narrative has had more reward to revisit after a decade+ of adult life experiences

He also had the best dialogue in the game, "...Whatever"
I concur with all that you said--When I beat these games I wasn't even a teenager, so I didn't gaf about the stories I mashed X through out all of FF8, and O through FF7.
I actually learned a lot from your post.

Alot of people in this thread dont know the difference between a Remake and a Remaster.

The new FFX is a remaster. Not a remake. Same game with updated graphics

Personally i thought FF VII had a convoluted and illogical plot. It was very good at times and very shit at others. I honestly have no intent to ever play the game again. Other FF games like FF IV, V, VI, and XI i will play again at least once more and likely more times.
I watched the trailer and despite my hesitation i must admit that the remake looks sweet as fuck. Very interested to see how it progresses especially with that battle system.
I hope fans are happy, gotta at least admit that the voice acting isn't near as bad as what other dubs have been. That should be a huge plus for sceptics.

It's wild how differing your guys' opinions of these games are.  I actually hated 12, didn't play it for more than a couple hours before dropping it.

was not even a fan of X at the time of its release,
played through the whole thing all butthurt about Square moving over to voice acting

Lulu is amazing tho

have not played anything beyond that
but going back in time, even had obscurish things like Final Fantasy Legend for Gameboy where you could play as a team of monsters
and the final boss was the game's creator

12 had a pretty meh story that was overly generic, but it had some of the best combat IMO. The hunt system was also pretty sweet, as you progressed through the story you unlock harder Hunt missions where you track down and fight extra bosses for rewards. Some of them get pretty crazy hard.

Also I loved how the original 12 lvl up system didn't use classes, you could unlock every weapon/armor/spell/ability for every character if you wanted. Each character just started in a different area of the lvl up map so it was easier to focus them on specific things.

The remastered version of 12 changed that though and added a more generic class system. At least each character can use 2 classes, but been meaning to mod it back to the original classless version as you can make everyone super OP if you grind enough.

They started going downhill story wise at least but I'd say the gameplay became hit or miss, with some parts having really fun gameplay and others more generic. Haven't actually played any past 12 but did keep an eye on each release to check the pros and cons.

Was pretty tempted to get 15, seems like they added some interesting things.

Lulu and Wakka were a funny couple. Auron was my shit though, he was such a tank he could solo some tough ass foes.

Did anyone here play X2 much? I vaguely remember playing a little as a kid but never got into it. Been meaning to try and give it another go after beating X on PC. Time to reinstall I guess.

I played X2 before I played X for some reason. I liked it. I don't remember it all that much though, tbh.

I just replayed IX, which imo, is the best game in the series and anyone who disagrees can fight me.

Auron was an awesome character and super useful in combat,
but did not like him in the same "way" as my appreciation for the execution on Lulu

this goes back to the series and aesthetic choices as the games evolved
FF6 had some pretty story-integral mecha and the like
but FF7 moved the series into a sort of post-industrial setting in contrast to the high fantasy setting the earlier titles had
and with that, character design became a substitute for class design

Tifa, in my opinion, really executes the sort of dressed-down style of the monks she is representing
her clothing is simple in design, and her focus is her mobility with extra weighting on her hands and feet for punches and kicks in a sort of dirty fighting style associated with the slum life she is in

Lulu, in a similiar manner, is prolly my favourite execution of adapting the Black Mage style into the post-industrial post-modern world FFX was running in

really nice artistic decisions here in my opinion

Won't fight you per se
IX was my favourite of the Playstation era
because it kept everything Square learned about working in 3D
and went back to the high fantasy design

IX in a lot of ways reminds me of a homage to VI
Zidane and Locke are pretty analogous as characters in the Thief class role
and Garnet/Dagger shares a sort of common story with Terra in terms of connection to the game's relative summons
Kuja is nowhere near the mad genius of Kefka, but he plays a similiar role in being adjacent to the royalty in the early game before pursuing godhood in the later game

Triple Triad (FFVIII) was a much better card game tho

I never got far into X-2. It just wasn't enjoyable to me for some reason.

Fun fact I have never played 7

I've always felt funny about this cause its like hella gamer taboo. I love rpgs, its kinda nuts I never got around to playing it. I even saw the ff7 movie advent children.

FF IX though was my first FF game and still my fav, still need to finish it. I have all my saves tho. I have so many unfinished games. I think I like ff12 (also unfinished) more than 10. I blame Tidus.
