I'm not crazy about video game remakes. To me, they're the same as movie remakes. Even when they're great, they're never going to beat the original.

When a classic movie gets remade, even when the remake is amazing, in the long run everyone still remembers and watches the original, and people forget about the remake.

There's something to be said for the original versions of things, with all their flaws intact. The flaws over time add something rather than taking something away.

Also chronocross sucks. One of the worst RPGs I've ever played, and a terrible sequel to one of the greatest video games ever made.

I liked how many characters there was in Chrono Cross, and I liked that they did an alternate dimension instead of time again, and I liked the battle system with the 1,2,3 thing and percent it will hit

The music was fantastic as well.  The battle theme, not so much.  The fiddle thing was weird.  Felt like a halloween ho-down every battle.

Wild Arms was one of the first games I played for Playstation -- borrowed from a neighbour upon getting the system
still love that game, especially the little mouse

9 was actually really good, if you got into the series aside from 7

8 was a strange mechanical experiment where the game was designed to be able to be beaten with a level 1 character if you knew how to manage your stats
it was mechanically interesting in that manner, but the experiment was not a success

6 was the pinnacle of the FF series tho

as an aside, did enjoy the old system of being able to manage character classes in 4 and 5
but 6 did an amazing job providing characterization to the class divisions
and 7 managed to carry the formula of 6 into early 3D

you couldnt manage character classes in 4, I think your thinking of 2 or 3 or something

could be x-X
5 and 6 were the ones I played on the original versions; 4 (or maybe 3?) was a Nintendo DS remake turned into 3d -- could be misremembering the class management for it entirely
there was also that strange numbering system where Final Fantasy 6 was Final Fantasy 3 for its initial North America release
plus 5 with the default character name Butz lol

FF X was one of my favorite stories tho...

X was one of my favorites too, been meaning to re install the remake and finally try and beat it.

Also I found X pretty hard at least once you progress far enough. Some of the bosses are pretty rough.

12 is my favorite gameplay wise though, the blend of realtime and time based combat is perfect. It almost feels like turn based combat but in real time with all the fights happening in the world rather than encounters.

I prefer the turn-based system. What is it these days? FFXIII Was the real-time based system, probably why I never finished it. I did enjoy it.

Yep, that's why I liked FF8. You could stay at level 1 all the way to the end.

I too heard FF6 was awesome.

yeah, FF8 was actually sort of an extreme case of FF7's materia slot system with the Junction system
all major battles and bosses did not provide EXP, only the AP (?) that leveled up Guardian Forces/Summons

was not a big fan of the Junction system, personally
but did get good enough with it to totally overpower my entire party
and, in reflection, it was real cheesey to just Aura spam or keep Squall at minimum health and do Lionheart every turn
but lots of fun at the time, and a very different approach to character customization for the series

was actually a fan of the FF8 story, it did some neat things with the idea of time travel and disintigrating memory
but, more particularly, Rinoa was a hugely beloved character for me
something draws me to girls with a rough life who do their best to keep positive
but it was also 'fun' how the narrative seems to pit you against one of your own party members as the final boss
Ultemecia as Rinoa from the future gone mad with rage after the failure of Squall to be her Knight played with some Japanese ideas of the magical girl vs. the maniacal witch

but it is fair to note that ff7 has padded me for some of my "distaste" for the conceptual approach to story ff8 took
ff7 decided to have a narrative that was focused heavily on a single character (Cloud) rather than the broader sort of world-focused narrative style of ff6
where the "main character" is not required to be part of your team for much of the game, and the plot allowed for a bit more exploration of side-characters
and how everyone has personal investment in taking down Kefka,
rather than a sort of proxy-investment through relationship to the main character

so having ff8 focused so centrally on Squall and Rinoa and their "romantic" relationship
with the rest of the supporting cast being there to further the narrative of Squall's memories of his traumatic childhood being eaten by his Guardian Forces
moreso than a personal investment in stopping Rinoa/Ultemecia's impact on the timeline and the future
was not as much of a problem to me

ff8 did not age well for replay for me tho
at like 14/15 playing through a game focused primarily on the romance of two teens was a sort of directly relatable narrative for me
but in my 30s a lot of it is me getting angry at Squall for being so fucking obtuse to Rinoa's advances

ff7's narrative has had more reward to revisit after a decade+ of adult life experiences

He also had the best dialogue in the game, "...Whatever"
I concur with all that you said--When I beat these games I wasn't even a teenager, so I didn't gaf about the stories I mashed X through out all of FF8, and O through FF7.
I actually learned a lot from your post.

Alot of people in this thread dont know the difference between a Remake and a Remaster.

The new FFX is a remaster. Not a remake. Same game with updated graphics

Personally i thought FF VII had a convoluted and illogical plot. It was very good at times and very shit at others. I honestly have no intent to ever play the game again. Other FF games like FF IV, V, VI, and XI i will play again at least once more and likely more times.
I watched the trailer and despite my hesitation i must admit that the remake looks sweet as fuck. Very interested to see how it progresses especially with that battle system.
I hope fans are happy, gotta at least admit that the voice acting isn't near as bad as what other dubs have been. That should be a huge plus for sceptics.

It's wild how differing your guys' opinions of these games are.  I actually hated 12, didn't play it for more than a couple hours before dropping it.

was not even a fan of X at the time of its release,
played through the whole thing all butthurt about Square moving over to voice acting

Lulu is amazing tho

have not played anything beyond that
but going back in time, even had obscurish things like Final Fantasy Legend for Gameboy where you could play as a team of monsters
and the final boss was the game's creator

12 had a pretty meh story that was overly generic, but it had some of the best combat IMO. The hunt system was also pretty sweet, as you progressed through the story you unlock harder Hunt missions where you track down and fight extra bosses for rewards. Some of them get pretty crazy hard.

Also I loved how the original 12 lvl up system didn't use classes, you could unlock every weapon/armor/spell/ability for every character if you wanted. Each character just started in a different area of the lvl up map so it was easier to focus them on specific things.

The remastered version of 12 changed that though and added a more generic class system. At least each character can use 2 classes, but been meaning to mod it back to the original classless version as you can make everyone super OP if you grind enough.

They started going downhill story wise at least but I'd say the gameplay became hit or miss, with some parts having really fun gameplay and others more generic. Haven't actually played any past 12 but did keep an eye on each release to check the pros and cons.

Was pretty tempted to get 15, seems like they added some interesting things.

Lulu and Wakka were a funny couple. Auron was my shit though, he was such a tank he could solo some tough ass foes.

Did anyone here play X2 much? I vaguely remember playing a little as a kid but never got into it. Been meaning to try and give it another go after beating X on PC. Time to reinstall I guess.

I played X2 before I played X for some reason. I liked it. I don't remember it all that much though, tbh.

I just replayed IX, which imo, is the best game in the series and anyone who disagrees can fight me.
