Oven Tek
    #2646123 - 05/06/04 05:06 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Does the Oven Tek actually hold water? The theory of the up-draft keeping anything from falling into the jar seems valid, but I remember reading something sometime last year that said that it doesn't actually do anything useful and could actually be worse. I just figured I'd ask since it's still on the shroomery after a year.

Ive used it before I bought my flowhood and it worked well.In fact when i was just starting out i use to just turn the stove burner on meduim low,and place a cooling rack you use for pies/cookies ect..over it and set the jar on that.Never even had problems with that, but i really wouldnt recomend it,i was just lazy when i started.
But the oven tek worked for me many times.

One way it could be worse is if your oven is really dirty, so I just rub down the working area on the lid with bleach first, but it worked well for me.

yes and i use to turn the oven on the highest setting for 1/2 an hour or so before i started so that the heat helped kill any nasties that might be in there.

I used it, works great for G2G! But you cant do agar work with it. I just innoculate in my room, contam free. Why bother to innoculate using the oven tek?

just because you get lucky and can innoculate without airborne contams, most cant,so the oven tek works well for that.Better safe than sorry, and ive done agar work with the oven tek before succesfully.I used to oven tek for 4 years for G2G,innoculations,agar work, everything untill I bought a flowhood and ive never had issues with it.

The oven tek works based on very sound scientific principle. First you should do just as ButterNut said and turn it on high for about 30 minutes and then let it sit for about 15min with the oven turned down to about 150deg. Then when you open let the air flow out into the room until it is safely cool enough to begin working.(The light will kick on indicating the inside temp is dropping below 150deg. This wont just help kill contams in the oven it will do a thorough job, believe me. If you do this right there is pretty much zero risk of airborn contams getting on your work. The one place they will get introduced is by you or your tools so make sure everything is as sterile as possible.

----GrOwer asked why use oven tek for innoculating? Well it is just so damn easy to do thats why! It is much more work to clean the entire kitchen and try to create cleanroom conditions.(which ,by the way,is a futile effort. Well that is my $0.02 worth!

MYKEY :jamming:

Youpasturize it in a pillow case just like dung, then you mix 50/50 with buttermilk bisquits and spread a inch thick layer across the substrate. The oven tek is not needed open air transfers are better with Squash
