Do experienced shroomers stick to one variety?
    #26458237 - 01/29/20 09:21 AM (4 years, 19 days ago)

Do experienced growers/trippers stick to just one variety of mushroom? Because I read a lot here and it's constantly reiterated that different varieties have the same psychoactive chemicals, just in slightly different amounts. So why would those of you beyond learning and casual experimentation grow more than one variety? It would seem to me that your efforts would go into working with one variety and cloning and isolating. Am I wrong? Just curious...

I like having the consistency of working with one variety.  I’m sure I would always play around with something else here and there, but it’s nice to know what to expect, when it will mature, and how much you’ll get.  It’s fun to try new things tho.  If I was running a mushroom factory where production was the bottom line than I would just run one mono crop.

This thread was moved from Advanced Mycology.

Reason:
Not advanced.

I would say no, also never heard of anyone doing anything like that. Even if you could theoretically duplicate your mushrooms as to be able to eat the exact same mushrooms twice the trip is so much set and setting that it wouldn't matter. You're not going to have the same trip anyway.

Some people will say that myan or Aztec mushrooms give them a trip to that is all myan and aztec... Placebo at its best.

If you want a better trip eat more mushrooms or make stronger ones.

Ive had good trips from all different varieties or cubes. If you blindfolded me and didn't tell the variety i and no one else would do any better than guesswork at identification

Variety is the spice of life.

Sure, some mycophile somewhere is probably dedicating their life to just one strain, and that might be more efficient, but, I think, for most hobby growers it isn’t all about efficiency as a collective. It’s more multifaceted.

Some examples:

Spreading prints around is a big motivator to grow a different variety rather than just sticking with a proven favorite. There is also a collector aspect, just like Pokémon or baseball cards.

Recently, someone was offering prints of x7x resurrected from an ancient print. I got all kinds of excited, Nothing to do with potency or growth, just the story of the print and the fact that I’m in the same boat. I have several 10+ year old prints, including an x7x of my own that I want to bring to life. So, seeing someone out there working with an old print with an obscure name is an inspiration.

Then, as for eating the fruits of this labor, it’s like eating at a Mexican restaurant; sure we all have our favorites and we know It’s all the same shit in the end, but, that doesn’t stop us from trying a new place across town that just opened up, does it?

I think you are underestimating the “hobby” part of this, getting fucked up on the most potent boomers is not the only thing growers are interested in. Fun is a huge component.

Give it a try, growing your own shrooms is a rewarding experience, even if you don’t grow the most potent varieties or get the heaviest yields.

First off thanks for moving the thread somewhere more appropriate. Still learning the site.

So the variety argument must be about experiencing how different strains grow, and what their fruits look like, and other properties not related to their "psychoactivity." I can appreciate that, but someone just in it for the trip probably doesn't go around fixing what ain't broke. So I'm conjecturing they stick to whatever they're most experienced with growing.

Contrast this with certain sites, like a certain magic truffles site, that describes very different trips for their 8 or so different strains. Is there anything behind that? I tend to think not. My reading suggests that potency is the only real difference, but I don't know.

Right now I’m obsessed with PEs. The teas I have made with them are awesome. It’s a damn shame they are a little on the finicky side to grow.

I used to grow a lot of different strains, Mazatepeca, Huatla, Nepal, Chitwan, Thai.

However, last year i grew African Transkei and I knew it was "The One". It was the one strain I really felt was special. Mazatepeca is special too but African Transkei takes it to the next level. Its got potency and a gentle but powerful trip experience that I always get a sense of spirituality from. It feels more like medicine from the Earth than a drug. Its wonderful.

So in a way, Im sticking with African Transkei as a "must grow" variety because they are just that special.

Yeah, those variety -fanatics are more after non-psychedelic properties like growing behaviour, looks, potency etc.
The trip itself is so variable, like others already said set and setting have a higher impact on how the trip feels than the variety of shrooms.

Sure some varieties are a lot stronger, like (Albino-)Pens Envy ((A)PE), so there's a reasn to grow these. Other than that a cube is still a cube. :smirk:
Differences are so marginal, and each trip is unique even with cloned isolates it still can feel different anytime, so it doesn't really matter anyway.

Yes yes, the process is amazing and witnessing it is a thing of beauty. There's so many flavor so limit it to one? But yeah I'm in love with the process from inception to the come down.

Mostly because different varieties - and different species - have different effects - and you won't know until you really try them.

I noticed different effects from multi-spore grows of Psilocybe Cubensis: Ecuador, B+, Golden Teacher. And wild Liberty Caps (Psilocybe Semilanceata). Huge differences between Semilanceata and Cubensis.

Not for everybody.  But for some people.

Those who detect these difference detect them easily enough, but they are more of a trip quality than "how high did I get" sort of comparison.

Those who don't detect them pretty much consistently deny any such differences exist.  As usual.  :laugh2:

Many people notice the differences between different types of alcohol inebriation.
Many just get drunk or drunker.

There's not really a quantifiable measurement to establish an individual's perceived effect, so the skeptical tend to just write it off as pseudology.

I, myself, notice the differences between regional varieties. For the most part, all southeast Asian varieties share similar effects, all southern US varieties share similar effects, etc.
It isn't ridiculous suggestive things like, 'I ate some koh samui and saw fractal stupas when I closed my eyes.' No. It's physiological effects and perceptive minutiae.
I've had good and not so good times on all of them - that doesn't change their unique characteristics.
I've left jars of different varieties unlabeled and it's very obvious to distinguish which I've taken.

The one caveat is with heavy doses, in which those subtleties are no longer very noticeable. As with alcohol.

You are touching on one of the longer standing family feuds within the magic mushroom consuming community.

Some users say all trips have enough variability that it isn’t really possible to discern between strain effects reliably.

Others say that different strains give different trips, that they themselves could discern in a test.

Wait until you find out about the folks who are of the opinion that the intention of the grower is the major factor in wether a trip experience is considered “better” or “worse”. 😊

My advice is, don’t bother trying to pick any side. Simply eat the shrooms and take the trip for what it is instead of contrasting and comparing with previous trips

I eat the mushroom. I trip on the mushroom. I say "what the fuck" - I go to sleep.

Variety hasn't seemed to play an impact nearly as much as potency does from different batches of the same variety.

I’d say in general terms, yes. I find B+ more “tribal”, whereas with GT, I’d say more racy, and lots more goblins.

But then I notice differences between mushrooms from the same (MS) flush.

I tend to agree it’s the growers intentions and love that affect the experience. My B+ grow was my first successful monotub; my GTs were either from PF Tek, or PF Tek mixed into substrate in small trays in SGFC.

But then the Liberty Caps I pick here in the NW England are significantly different to any cubensis I have had, medium or high dosages. Much more OEVs with inanimate objects dancing, turning towards me; exponentially more fractal faces in trees and stuff. Yet the music is not so important; on cubensis, I at the very minimum am enveloped by 3d soundscapes and sometimes I am the music - it’s a heavenly experience. LCaps are much deeper in my opinion, probably better for walking on compared to cubensis, which I generally lie down for.

in the most religious of terms,

all these entheogens are the sacrament, and when it is time to commune on the sabbath, any one that is prepared is the most suitable choice.

if you have a lot, just line up your favorites and fuggetaboutdit - you now have a physical calendar, which is your stash and each sabbath will have the sacrament as required.

otherwise, eenie meenie miney moe.
