Do these grain jars look ok? It’s my first attempt so I’m curious.

They look great but time for a shake to distribute mycelium throughout the jar.

They are workable but they do look like there is a serious contamination in all of them. Probably dirty inoculate.

Can you explain please? I’ve been wondering this specifically. I’m very new to grain jars so I have no clue. They’ve grown pretty steady so far but I need to know what to look for contam wise. Any info is appreciated

I they’re growing pretty quick so wasn’t sure about the shake. I guess I’ll shake them tomorrow just didn’t want to disrupt the growth

How fast? When did you inoculate?

The jars look wet which is a sign of bacteria. The wet grains against the glass are evidence of this. Like sockadin said, the jars are still workable. I hope. I'd shake them which would make it fully colonize in 3-4 days or so. And if they don't re-colonize or colonize much slower than that, you'll know it's too far contaminated. It's a good test for your grains.

I started them on the 19th with agar. It started to colonize the first few layers after about 5 days on the 24th. Since then it’s grown about 3/4 inch a day if I had to put a Number on it

I'm very skeptical in general about if it's even mushroom mycelium.. spore>agar>grain usually isn't that fast .. a smell test thru the filter could determine that .. doesn't sound right to me

Thank you for your info I will go shake them now. Fingers crossed! I just don’t see where the bacteria could have came from honestly if that’s so. I used sterile practice and thought I followed the instructions for the grain pretty throughly. Any idea where it could have started?

What else could it be? It doesn’t look like cobweb from what I’ve seen of it through pics. I’ve heard around 2-3 weeks is close to the higher side of normal with agar. It’s been 12 days

When I shake I can sometimes smell mushrooms, but not always. And the timeline seems okay if you started these jars 12 days ago. Some would say it's slow, but my jars have taken at least 2 weeks to colonize (maybe more) so you're in the colonization time window. Good luck, I'm rooting for you. You can take a look at my first grow journal a few comments in and see what my bacterial jars looked like. My harvest turned out great, so a little bacteria never hurt no one.

I think they don't look great, but it's hard to put my finger on why, aside from the wetness. It could just be the wetness making it look funky, but excess moisture also promotes the growth of bacteria and mould so that could be an issue as well.

12 days from agar innoc til half colonized grain jars seems pretty fast. Sometimes this can be a sign of mould since it grows much faster than mushroom myc.

Either way you'll know a few days after a shake! Hoping it turns out okay.

Lots of info in that gif..

If I was in your shoes, that gif from a Trusted Cultivator with a shit ton of posts would tell me to scrap those jars, review the techniques and ask questions that come up before trying again.

Just my 2cents though.

Edit: PS, don't waste time polishing a turd.

Can you get some better pictures up. They all do seem to have a weird contam look to them I’m having a hard time finding anywhere that looks like the mycelium I’ve had in my jars(I am very new to this tho) Maybe it’s just the pics? idk

I disagree with susurrador. Experienced people told me to throw out my slightly bacterial jars, and I went on to a great harvest. And I've spawned even worse looking jars and it went great. Your jars look worse than mine, though. Shaking it up to see what happens costs nothing, so at a minimum, do this. If it passes this test, Going to sub is a bit more work, but spawning them anyway is a learning experience even if it contams. cronicr knows his shit, and obviously doesn't like the look of these jars, but he also didn't tell you to toss them. Just know what your getting into: you have a higher risk of contam with those jars...

Also, better pics would help diagnose. The growth seems a bit puffy. It would be nice to have some rhizomorphic growth to confirm it's cube myc.

I would shake one and see what happens.

If it recovers after 3-4 days then shake the rest, if not I would top fruit them.

If you used the dish from this POST I think you used a dirty culture to begin with.

Dirty in, dirty out.

Can anyone second that?

Also looks like you have something wrapped around that petri in the post and hanging over the edge of an exposed dish for the photo before you made the transfers to grain. Could have picked up all kinds of stuff just during the photo shoot.

You said something about doing this before the supply runs out. Supply of what are you running out of?

Edit: maybe I'm high. That petri has a lid and is wrapped in tape, isn't it?

:wellthatsweird:

Nail in the coffin there. Good catch, susurrador. I had a growth like that on agar (minus the contamination hole) and it never pinned on the plate nor sporulated. Never figured out what it was. Even without the contamination hole, I'd be suspicious of the myc itself if you transferred away.
