man it was all i could do to restrain myself. looked like she got squished pretty good i think ill just wait til i go back up north. never knew they were in that creek i spent a lot of time in that area. i had been plotting for years to capture some from the coast and dump em in there but looks like they already figured it out. used to be salmon and steelhead and cutts, all gone now but years ago there was still tiny rainbows in there somehow. ive been trying to get them going again for years. i scoop up all the doomed salmon and trout fry and juvy suckers, shiners, minnows, and sculpins from the puddles along the rivers in early summer and spread them around, mostly that creek but a few others as well. dont indite me.
went uphill to see how far up theyre poppin. found an albino hog i think somebody cleaned that spot out an hour before i got there. coming back down more winter chantrelles and hedgehogs. bonus Deconica oregonense, Sedum sp. and a Rana species

Yeah winter chanterelle is such a weird name. I usually find a few in the spring at higher elevations. They fruit for a longggg time. Definitely more so in late fall and winter.

Yep, they are tasty. I pick truckloads of them in their high season here (Sep-Nov) and dry, works perfect as umami-type spice to lots of various dishes.

In urban areas, you’ll probably have the best luck looking for Morchella importuna (all morel pics in this thread are this species), which is one of the only species in the genus that grows in landscaped wood chip beds. They’re fairly common at this time of year through early may depending on your exact location and the weather— aside from familiarizing yourself with the species and its habitat, I’d say my best advice is just to spend a lot of time walking and keeping an eye out. Eventually they’ll show up somewhere random.

There are also some mustard greens, one mallow leaf, some magnolia blossoms, red flowering currant, some purple dead nettle, and big leaf maple blossoms. The hyacinth was used as an edible garnish on a salad.
Nice finds everyone!
