Todays Find??
    #26460046 - 01/30/20 11:15 AM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Sorry for the poor quality of pics...I was driving along and spotted this solitary fruit in the undergrowth on side of road in the pouring rain-so battled to get a decent habitat shot.

Habitat:
Growing on side of road under trees next to rotting log

Gills:
Gills absent.
Porous...

Stem:
Short and very thick-very hard.White

Cap:
Roundish large very thick-spongy-white on edges-dark brown/rust coloured on top

Spore print color:
??

Bruising:
No bruising/brownish where wet/handled

Other information:
Very solid and heavy apart from cap which is real spongy
No mushroomy smell whatsoever
Just one of the most fascinating fruits I have ever seen/collected

Any idea what kind of trees were closest to it?
What’s the general region?

Just based on what I see, I’d say it’s a root-fruiting Ischnoderma resinosum. Is it velvety? It looks like it is but that might be a foggy lens.

Ah. My confidence in my ID is like 2% then... I haven’t brushed up on South African polypores just yet. Very interesting find though. Mushroom observer might help narrow it down based on region.

Might be something in the Laetiporaceae. Similar to Kusaghiporia usambarensis, Laetiporus persicinus and Polyporus brittonii.

Thanks for that dj
Had a look thru those you mentioned
And I think it may very well be Laetiporus persivinus~peach chicken of the wood~which according to what I read is edible?Id love a TC to drop by and confirm but would also like it if someone could tell me that if its edible then maybe its worth trying to to take a few tissue samples to try start cultivating?...
