"Ghetto Shotgun Tub" Advice welcomed!
    #26458781 - 01/29/20 04:35 PM (4 years, 18 days ago)

I'm pleased to announce that SWIMS back on the shroomery! After almost falling off the wagon, getting caught up in a horrible addiction to meth, (and later a research chem that SWIM believed to be 4-FA) SWIM didn't know where else to look, before SWIM remembered the wonderful, healing world of psychedelics, and promptly realized how much of an idiot SWIM was, and ordered SWIM some spores.

Whellp, some several months later, and SWIM got some cakes going! Now, SWIM ingrained the PF Cake recipe into my skull, SWIM could never forget it, as well as proper colonization and sterilization techniques, and all that (SWIM keep isopropyl around like there's gonna be a prohibition on it!)

now, the story is, SWIM colonized some cakes a while back... colonization went beautifully... (and this is surprising, considering SWIM "ghettoed" some mason jars out of two tiny glass bowls, with tinfoil, instead of caps. No contams!). SWIM waited about a week after they where fully done to birth them...

Whellp, not gonna lie to you guys, its been 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 weeks, IN fruiting conditions, and SWIM hasn't seen any pinning yet! Any reason as to why that could be?

Now, SWIM made a fatal mistake when SWIM put these guys in there... SWIM simply laid them down on squares of foil, not realizing that these guys would eventually be cursed to lay in a tiny, albeit non-negligible pool of standing water... Thats mistake number one.

Mistake number two, is, SWIM *believes*, that SWIM didn't put enough holes into his "shotgun chamber" (if you'd still call it that)

The last couple of weeks, SWIMs cakes have still been showing signs of healthy growth, although SWIM feels like his cakes' surfaces have become "matted" with mycelium (not sure if that's the proper term to call it, or if that applies only to casings)

So, today, SWIM finally listened to the signs his cakes where giving him, and flipped them over, just to realise "Oh no! Theres yellowish globby spots on the bottoms of my cakes, oh no!" SWIM quickly did some research and realised, not to worry, it just myco piss.

Well, SWIMs been fanning and misting 2-3 times a day, which, he has bumped up to 4-5 times a day, trying to get them to do something, ANYTHING.

SWIMs just wondering, is there something that hes doing wrong? Its been 3-4 years since his last cake grow, and as awful as it sounds, he thinks that he had an easier time with his last casing on horse manure, and they say cakes are supposed to be easy!

SWIMs really just hoping that it was a lack of sufficient FAE and, that the cakes, staying in a standing pool of water/myco piss on the bottom, is the real culprit. He put the cakes on some jar lids, get them up outta the water, and poked an extra two sets of holes on every side of the shotgun chamber, and it doesn't seem to be too much, as everything still seems quite humid in there. Anyone got any suggestions?

(on a side note, gotta say that SWIMs happy he rediscovered this side of my life, its been too long, fellow shroomites <3)

heres some pics of the babies

Also, swim just wanna say, swims FAIRLY confident that I haven't been over-watering these guys (well, maybe SWIM had been at 3-4 times a day misting now, but he's been misting less, than I would have been at 1-2 times a day  ) If these pics of the cakes look a little "slimy" , its because SWIM just misted them LOL

5:30 A.M.

Problem Solved?!?

Soooo, I haven't been able to sleep at all! Whelpppp, I go to check my plants at 5 this morning, and, low and behold , one of my cakes already has pins on it!

However, I've got a couple questions, that hopefully can be answered here...

1. Before anything, I VERY CAREFULLY picked up both my cakes, wiping the myco piss off the bottoms of them from yesterday... (I forgot to wipe the piss off yesterday when I put jar lids underneath them ._.) as well as, flip the jar lids right-side-up, because I had them "upside down" yesterday. Could picking them up during the fruiting cycle potentially fuck the flush up?

UPDATE: 9:30 A.m

2. I guess I kinda answered my own question this morning, but, just to get someone else's input on it,
I know my cakes where due to start pinning any moment, and they started finally appearing this morning, very hard to make out, and I'm growing Golden Teacher...

But, surely it's not coincidence that, when I poked all those extra holes, that they started pinning, right?

I made an example with an unused tote of mine, using markers.

The black marker represents the initial holes that I've made and kept for 3 weeks now,

The yellow marker represents the additional holes I made last night,

And the blue marker represents the water and perlite layer.

But yeah, all around, I guess Im wondering, am I lookin' good or is there something wrong here? lol

(and its also a bump ^-^)

hey! welcome back! they look super wet - is there standing water in the perlite? The perlite should be wet but not sitting in water. That in combination with the large pieces of foil is blocking air flow. you gotta trim that foil down to the size of the cakes - the idea of the perlite and all the holes is so that air can move up through them, carrying humidity and fresh air, while keeping air flowing around the cakes - evaporation is the pinning trigger. putting those holes in the bottom definitely got you on the right path. removing that excess foil will get you all the way there

edit: I just noticed the jar lids - you can just leave them on those and get rid of the foil

Thank you very much, I'm feeling welcomed hehe

Turns out, as soon as I put more holes in my tub, they started pinning... I harvested some yesterday (albeit they where a little early, but I mostly just picked the mutes/aborts, give the healthy ones more energy to grow) ate em, and oh yeah, they're definitely active LOL. I coulda definitely gone for more, but, oh well, still learned a lesson, that patience is perfection with these guys...

Figured Id give a little update on how these dudes are doing, I know everyone likes to see these healthy little buggers <3

I know they look wicked wet, but I always take pics after I mist them... Idk why >.>

is there a reason why the perlite shouldn't be in standing water? I know that it *COULD* be a contam issue, but, Im in a sub-arctic (more like, similar to alaska, just opposite side of the country xD) area, and contams are easily avoided during the brutal winters, here...

It could be due to too much humidity? Now that my FAE is balanced out, if I don't mist them for a day or two, the cakes dry out (to a healthy level, theyre just drinking up the water, I know you know what I'm talkin' about lol)

The reason why I leave the perlite in standing water, is , unfortunately I leave for a couple days at a time, due to work... I like them to have a little extra reservoir of water, so that no matter what, they can have all the water they need and keep on growing, regardless if I'm around or not

I sometimes switch up the light cycle from 12/12 to 24(ish), I know that it can sometimes force the fruits a little too fast, but these guys don't seem to mind it... i usually only do 24 hours when Im gone or reallllyy lazy...

Next up is gonna be a post on a monotub I started, using one *almost* fully colonized pf cake, annnnd some spore syringe liquid, just for a little extra *ooomph* I know that, that is very good way to get contams, but this is like my 10-ish grow now, I definitely know how to identify them, and, a week later, no signs of contam at all, and 80-90 percent of my monotub is colonized! Ill make a post on that in a couple of days!

also, fun fact: I dont know if it works like this or not, but after buzzing on (id say somewhere around 1.5- 2) gs dried worth of cubensis, I tried robo tripping later in the day (took 400 mgs, enough to make ANYONE feel it) and... NOTHING. I know how psilocybin tolerance builds up, but, I'm curious to see if it binds to the same receptors as Dextromethorphan, or what? o.o
